I finally sold my 20-year-old Ping Zings and am looking into custom clubs. A local pro in Fort Lauderdale told me to not buy clubs off the shelf. The pros may promote them but they are nothing like what they play, although they do carry the brand names that we all salivate over. This pro said he makes generics that do exactly what the big brands do, only without the overhead. And loft/lie is not getting fitted. Much more must be considered. Any comments? Thanks.

Re: Equipment confusion
Your pro is right. When club sets get assembled they are rarely every checked for consistency. You have one guy putting together the 7 irons, another guy putting together the 6 irons, another guy putting together the 5 irons, etc... It's better to have one guy putting together your entire set to make sure all the clubs match a gradient CPM scale. Most manufacturers will do that by special request which your pro may have access to.

Re: Equipment confusion
If you are purchasing new clubs, go with the extra time/money, and be sure they are properly fitted to your swing. This also includes your putter, if purchasing one of them too. Sets sold off the rack are pretty much all standard lengths, and lie. If you do buy something off the rack, at least be sure the irons' lie angles can be adjusted at a later date if need be. +/- 2* is a good starting point. Some brands also offer a life time unconditional warranty on their clubs. This can be another plus for the end user. This is also why I play the brand of irons I do. I can go into just about any golf store, hit a few balls into a net, and the computer print out, as read by the salesman will say I am standard length, and lie. In reality, I am standard length, but 2* upright on the lie. I play a brand name set of irons that are fitted, but my woods/driver are components that the club maker/swing instructor I use builds for me. I usually purchase new equipment every 4 or 5 years to catch up with technology. Not because my clubs wear out. The quality is as good, if not better, as any of the larger, brand names. The fact they are all fitted to my swing allows them to play better than any high dollar set purchased off the rack. Just because a pro plays a certain brand is meaningless. They are getting paid to play that particular brand. If another brand were to come along, and offer the pro more money, she/he would most likely switch to the other brand, and play just as well. GJS
