  • Wedge loft?

Hi all , I have collected a number of wedges over the years ,most orphaned from friends, and am curious to know what degrees loft they are. One is marked 55*, the others a mystery. Is there any way to measure the loft of a club at home or is it a shop job ?

    Regards, golfshooter

If you can get it to sit square with no shaft lean a simple protractor will do.

      Hi lowpost
do you just mesure the face angle against the back line of the shaft. doing it like that does mean you dont have to worry abount the bounce.
      cheers

          Hi Go Low
just wanted to check, you mesure to the front line of the shaft! not the back.
          cheers

I've always measured loft to the centerline (or shaft axis or center of hosel bore) of the shaft. However, the image I posted indicates loft is measured to the front (targetward) side of the shaft. I've never seen loft measured to the back side of the shaft. I think the correct (or most often used) method is to the centerline of the shaft or center of the hosel bore.
              Hi Go Low
thanks that clears it up for me. i'll do as you do and measure it to the centerline from now on.
              thanks again

Surely the loft angle will be the same irrespective of it being measured from the front middle or back of the shaft? Or am I being a bit thick here?

                  Hi Brian
the shaft angle being thicker at the grip and not having the same thickness all the way down, it gived the outside edge of the shaft a little more angle so taking the measurement in ther middle makes most sense.
                  cheers

                          Re: Wedge loft?

Hi, thanks for the discussion everyone. Using a protractor I measured the club face in relation to the centre of the hosel on the known club and it showed true at 55*. The other three clubs are dated sand wedges all coming in at 60*. Correct me if I am wrong, but there seems to be generational changes to the loft of clubs compared to how they are numbered and or described. For example, my sand wedge is a Wilson Harmonised 55*. I am one of those who gets great pleasure out of lofting the ball high and have it drop and stop, rather than play a bump and run (conditions allowing of course) so I really enjoy the short game. I thought I saw the need for a lob wedge, but after much experimenting I found that I can play a great variety of shots with the Wilson. It has become the most versatile club in my bag and I am not sure that one actually plays a stroke with this club, rather wields the wedge in many situations. And I must add the Wilson is a fine wedge, with plenty of back spin if required, and at an affordable price. But hey everyone is different that's why there is so much choice, anyway I got way off track there, so I'm off.

                          happy golfing , golfshooter
