Some(me but subject to change) try to learn how to "wield" 3 wedges well. Others prefer an extra and if so what do we leave out? When talking wedges I have found it is where bounce as well as loft really becomes important.

Wedges, how many and why?

Re: Wedges, how many and why?
I use four wedges, a pitching, gap, sand and lob, I only carry irons up to a five and use a four and three hybrid. So my set at the moment consists of a Driver, 3 wood, 3 & 4 hybrid, 5 to 9 irons, four wedges and a putter. My sand wedge has 9 deg of bounce, the gap, and lob both have 7 deg.

Re: Wedges, how many and why?
I'm pretty much the same as BrianW on wedges and the rest of the bag, except I carry Driver, 5 & 7 woods, 4 hybrid, 5 - 9 irons and putter. The 5 wood is because I hit it nearly as far as a 3 wood but straighter, and the 7 wood is because I have it but not a 3 hybrid.
I prefer carrying four wedges so that all yardages from 125 yards (my pitching wedge max) and in are pretty well covered with half, three quarter or full wedge shots. This should eliminate any guess work as to how hard to swing on any pitch shot.

Re: Wedges, how many and why?
Except for the lob I have the same bag as both of you only I have a 3w 5w and 4i. Sounds like a similar balance. We have a lot of thinly grassed hard ground in summer.I have a 55* sand wedge with a sharp edge and broad sole with imperceptible bounce that is useful to add then.It is amazing how much bounce controls the effective loft. It plays like a lob and when I have it in place of the other SW I miss the distance and can get caught in bunkers sometimes,so there is some indecision there. I am thinking of dropping the 4i as the hybrid is so versatile anyway.Last edited by golfshooter; 08-21-2011, 12:11 AM.
