  • New Tee Design

A few weeks ago, I was at a party at Maryland's eastern shore on a river's edge. Drunk and a little silly, we bet that someone can't clear the bank (about 280 yds out was my guess). So we get out my driver (I never travel with out them) and take turns whacking my new Pro-Vs one after the other into the river... A few get close but unfortunately, all the tees I had are now gone as they all got popped into the river along with the balls.

So with about 10 balls left and no more tees, we call it quits with no one making the bank to the other side. Really bothered the more beer I had -- those beautiful, shiny new balls mocking me, I start to think of a way to make tees. We try everything from a pile of sticks, to risking it off a beer bottle. Then in a stroke of genius, I found that balancing a cork on the ground and a bottle cap on the cork and a ball on the cap was the perfect tee. So, away I went and in what must have been unbridled enthusiasm at the new invention cleared the banks to roars of cheers!

Later that week really bored while driving 6 hours to New York, I came up with this prototype in my head.

I know they make these plastic tees that have stoppers to regulate the height, but I think they really never caught on because it was never adjustable. Plus, the cork is virtually unbreakable. Those plastic ones break all the time.

They would be custom fitted with any slogan burned into them. Would anyone consider buying these? I just wanted to get your feedback first before I go do something silly.

Do the corks come in different heights? Iron, oversized driver, fairway wood, wedge? Do I get to consume the beer before the bottle cap is applied? Do different beers produce different results? (I want an anti-slice beer cap).

When the picture is approved, you'll see. No cap on this prototype. It's a real tee's head. But, yes. You will hit it lower with a Merlot, and it will take your ball for a ride with a Cab.

Are you sure it wasn't that one last beer that loosened the swing and made the shot ???

I did recently see some tees for sale in a sports store which where made of bristles like a brush. The tee has a plastic section which goes in the ground like a normal tee and then a small round brush on which to balance the ball. I haven't tried them yet. Has anyone seen such a tee? I must get around to checking the rules to see whether you can use them.

I hope it doesn't take me more then 6 beers to loosen up, yikes I would have a real problem. Although...now that I think about it...the first time I broke 70 was under 3 beers. Didn't Walter Hagen play his best after a long night at the pubs?

As for the brush and cork tees, good idea to figure if this is legal..I never thought it would be a question as long as the tee does not impead the striking of the face and ball. I have seen those "no slice" tees that have the plastic face to stop the spinning and do know those are illegal.

I think the brush tees are legal. I do know they're endorsed by John Daly.

I've seen them used - fantastic for over sized drivers, but I think you'd have to cut 'em down for woods and irons. They never break (although they start to fray after a couple dozen rounds), and in theory are the best bet to launch the ball, as the frictional coefficient is negligible with the multiple minute points of contact the brush supplies.

It would be interesting to see if they provide any kind of distance or accuracy bonus, or if they're just good, long-lasting tees designed to have you buying tees less often.

On the downside, you can't use a brush tee to clean the grooves in your clubs!
