  • Winter Blues

Over here in the UK the weather is its usual self for November - bloody freezing! I was just wondering what is the best way to keep warm on the course especially hands, I have tried a pair of wooly gloves that I have but even they didn't help much.

The best way to keep warm is to walk. Riding in a cart will freeze you to death! Take along a thermos with hot coffee, tea or cocoa. Wear a warm hat and dress in layers - no cotton! Cotton traps moisture which will reduce body heat. Don't get too bulky though - more than three layers will reduce your range of motion. A layer of polar fleece or wool and a wind proof jacket and pants are best. Finally, get a pair of golfing mitts. These typically made of fleece and slip on and off quite easily (even over your golf glove) and will even keep your hands warm!

How about taking the winter off? Travel to a warmer climate? There is nothing worse then playing in cold. Give me rain, wind, heat, but no cold. This is why God invented skis, to give us a break from golf...

Can't agree more with Greg, South Africa is great for golf at this time of year and flights are getting cheeper.

On the otherhand, just finished waxing the snowboard but, here in Germany, it is too cold even for skiing. Last weekend was -19C and 40kmh wind.

You are likely to damage yourself playing with cold muscles in the cold. If you have to play, you might want to consider skiing underclothes. Even if the head isn't cold, prevents 45% of heat loss. You can also get microwave handwarmers from the skishop. They have gel inside which you microwave and then either put them in your gloves or simply hold them. They give off heat for a few hours.

In the meantime, I'm trying to work out how to fix the driving net or at least a putting area in the cellar (the girlfreind doesn't allow golf in the house).
