  • Numbers on balls

What is the significance of the numbers on balls. I just bought a pack of 15 and the numbers on them range from 1 - 5. I assume it's to do with hardness and distance, but which are more suitable for a relative beginner?

    Re: Numbers on balls

    Hi

The numbers on the ball are not to do with them being different from each other. They are all the same ball. The number is to help the golfer identify his ball from the others he is playing with.

    I hope this helps.

Heres a great tip for ball marking....

Take a magic marker (the most horrid dark indelible one you can find) and draw a straight line over the top of the marking on the seam (usually the model of ball not the manufacturers name or number). Use this line to line up putts, line up drives, everything. You would be amazed the difference it makes. Without exaggeration I would say it has trimmed at least 2 shots off my scores.

On the number issue, I used to love those Precept balls with 00 as the number....they started making them again I think. On a related issue Precepts new ball is excellent...the U-Tri Tour, I tried one recently and its as good as the Pro-V1.

I really hate number 1's for some reason. I like all the high numbers 4 and up. They say a lot of golfers are superstitious about things like this!

A number in the mid hundreds usually refer to the number of dimples on a ball (think pro v1 392).

A number between 40 and 120 usually refers to the compression rating of the ball.

The single digit numbers are strictly for identification.
