New Irons- Any recommendations?

    New Irons- Any recommendations?

    Im about to buy a new set of irons but a bit lost in the sheer number available. Im a 4 handicapper but have used the same clubs (Ping eye 2's) that my cousin gave me for my 13th birthday 10 years ago. He's 6 inches taller than me so I thought it time to get some custom fit. I want something that helps with a low trajectory as I play most of my golf on the Scottish Links courses.
    Im sure everyone has there own personal fave's but wanted to know what the general consensus is and where I should start looking?

    Im not to good with irons but for low tatrectory try the taylormade rac LT a nice midsize head, and look very nice siting on the floor

      Thanks- I tried them today but prefer the clubs with a smaller headsize. Any thoughts on Mizuno mp30's - quite liked the feel on the range

        I reckon best of all goto the shop and tell them what your looking for and what you favor etc, and they will sort you straigh out

          If you are a low handicapper and you want a lower ball flight, check into a set of blades. Mizuno definitely has the best out there, but there is also the regulars as well - Titleist, Cleveland, Nike, Taylor Made. You may also want to look into a set of 600B Snake Eyes irons.

            i would suggest a set of Taylormade Rac CB's, they can be found on ebay for a good price. They are very workable, but are fairly forgiving as well, plus they are about the same size as most blades. The shape is very similar to Nike blades, which is why i like them.

              I don't know which irons give a relatively low ball flight but you'll definitely want something with good feel and shot-making ability for links golf. Given your low handicap that really means a set of forged blade-type clubs. My shortlist would be (in no particular order):

              Mizuno
              Ben Hogan
              Titleist
              Cleveland
              Macgregor

                I dunno prowlsta, you already have one of the best sets of irons in history. If you are happy with them get them regripped. I had a set of Eye 2's once, wish I had never got rid of them.

                You have learned to play the game with Pings so I would suggest a good cavity back iron. Unfortunately Ping have never matched the Eye 2, the next best are the ISI's preferably in Beryllium Copper.

                Failing that try a set of Hogan Apex Pro they are similar to the whole Mizuno MP-30, Titleist 690CB idea, but a good bit better value for money. Personally I think Hogan are second only to Mizuno in the quality of their irons. The Cleveland TA3's are fantastic as well.

                If you are getting rid of the Pings, give me a shout .

                      I hit the new Callaway X-Tour forged irons yesterday. I tried the 4I, 7I and PW for the set. I have to say that I liked the feel much better than the X-16 Pro Series I play now. While the X-16s are nice when wanting to hit a straight shot, they are not the easiest iron to work (draw, fade, knockdown on command). I was able to work the ball much better with the X-Tour irons. However, I tend to prefer the blade type of irons (why I brought the X-16s is beyond me). The new X-Tour is still a cavity back iron and not exactly what I am looking for. I am certain that I will trade in my X-16 Pros for the Mizuno MP-32 irons in the very near future. I had Mizuno MP-30 irons before the X-16s and traded those in. Again, why I did this I have no idea.

                      prowlsta, with your handicap and where you play, you would probably do well with any type of iron. Good luck in finding the right iron set for you.

                        These days you will struggle to find good clubs that promote low trajectory. i'd suggest going for a classic looking club if you are used to playing with eye 2's.

                        Personally i'd go for these babies!

                        Feels like a blade, sits like a blade, but with the forgivness that you'd be used to in the pings. They're pricy, but seeing that you don't mind commiting to a club for a reasonable time, paying a little extra might be worth your while. The mid irons promote a traditional trajectory, while the short irons are easier to knock down than most.

                        To top it all off, they're simply beautiful!

                            I have just gone back to the Mizuno MP-30s. These offer the forged feel and ability to work the ball as I want. These irons also offer some forgiveness when my swing is not so good.

                              Thanks guys- its between the mp30s and the mp32's they both feel awesome- any thoughts whether the extra £100 is worth it?
