  • x-14's or x18's?????

I have had a set of Callaway x-14's for the past two years. I bought them used and like them a lot. It is only the 2nd set of clubs I have owned. I am thinking about upgrading to the x-18. I am a 20 handicap and have only recently started the lesson process. I know just enough about the swing to make me dangerous. I obviously want to bring the handicap down and need some advice on the clubs!!! Please help!!!
New to the site so I hope I did this right!! Iowa Golfer

    Iowagolfer,

    Firstly welcome to the site.

The only advise with new clubs is to get them fitted properly...most decent retailers or pros will give you a full fitting in with the price of the clubs.

Make sure you have the new set to your exact requirements then you may find your h/capp dropping even further.

As for make and model the choice is up to you, whatever feel good in your hands.

X14 Callaway are great clubs......X16s which I have are fantastic clubs.......X18s look even better but thats only my opinion as a Callaway fan.

      Hey Iowa,

I just got myself a new set of the x18 pro series, the best club i have ever hit. If you dont want the pro's the standard x18s are great too, my local pro fitted them out and i couldnt have asked for any more.
The pro series has a slightly smaller head size for better shot manouvering, the standard 18s are slightly fatter, thus enabling a higher ball flight.
Either way they are both fantastic and as Ian said they both llok great!

In my opinion, the X-14s are better than the X-18s. My advice is work on your game with a set of irons you are familiar with. Once you have perfected the lessons and are confident with your changes, then go out and get some new clubs if you wish.

The X-14's remain the best irons Callaway have made. If you are happy with them I wouldnt bother swelling their coffers anymore with the 18's (which are just last years Big Bertha's in a fancy new dress)
I have used both and the X-14's still feel better. Treat yourself to some posh new grips and give them a good clean and polish and they will feel and look like new.

Thanks to all of you that replied. This site is pretty cool! Scotland, Australia, Canada......awesome! I think it sounds like the x-14's are just as good as the x-18's! One thing I did notice in my research is that the gap wedge I got on ebay is an x-14 Pro Series. I believe this means it doesn't have offset?? Also I was told the Pro Series is for the lower handicapper. Would it be worth my while to try and get a non-Pro Series gap wedge? I only used it the last month of the Iowa golf season so I didn't have too many chances to use it. Thanks again for the help! My golf lingo is limited. I only found out two summers ago what a handicap was!!!!! Mine is high....I know that much!

Most wedges have minimal to no offset at all. I wouldn't worry about that with your wedges. However, if you were mixing and matching to replace your 5 iron it would be a concern.
