    Balls!

    Imature I know, I was just looking for a cheap giggle

    Im a 16 Hcap, with my scores dropping faster than something quick recently, but I always use lake balls, or "Winfield" - Asdas own make! I've won a couple of packs of good balls, but noticed no difference, how good do I have to be for it to have effect, and which relatively cheap balls would you reccomend?

    You wont really notice the difference until you hit the ball pretty much the same all the time. I notice the difference with so called 'cheap balls' mostly on the greens, they feel very hard there. Off the driver they are good enough but anything that requires a bit of feel leaves them wanting a bit.


    I would recommend Pro-V1 type balls to anyone who isnt likely to lose 2 or 3 a round. They are the longest and feel the best all round.

    You can get lake balls for 15 a dozen or refurbished for 20.

      I agree with Mizunoman, you won't see any difference in the performance from the golf ball until you hit the ball consistently.

      But, where you will see a difference between say a top-of-the-line golf ball made for better players and say a Top Flite is around the green. The Titleists, Hogans, Nike's ... they all spin more and so will help your short game to become more targeted.

      Lake balls, new balls ... same ball, pretty much same performance if it's in good condition.

        Sorry fellas, lake balls are not equal to new balls (but they're closer to refurbs).

        Greg Norman signed on with a company that has developed a chemical that activates with water. The more water a golfball absorbs, the darker the colour gets.

        A ball that sits in water for 6 days loses something like 6 yards and 3* of accuracy - or, 1yd and 0.5* for every day it's submerged.

        As for refurbished balls, I'd only buy refurbished high end balls (once my HCP drops a little more), as refurbishing shallows out the dimples (making for more distance, but less spin, when compared to its untouched OEM.)

        I prefer to keep my eyes out for good deals on new balls (like Top Flite Tour Strata's for $15CAD/doz, Maxfli DTec for $2CAD/sleeve (3), Srixon balls $15USD/doz)

        That said, if my handicap doesn't drop into the low teens soon, it'll be back to high end refurbs at $0.50-$0.75CAD / ball.

          Doesn't the better ball, Pro VI and Callaway HX Tour, that has more spin and is better around the green also hurt the high handicapper off the tee? Doesn't the extra spin make for a bigger slice or hook?? Please advise.

          Or would it be good to use the ball with more spin and control because the short game is where the majority of the strokes are taken?????

            I would recommend buying new balls but the lower end of the cost spectrum. I play Callaway HX Tour as I do not tend to lose many balls. I would recommend Top Flite, Precept/Nike, Maxfli or Titleist balls. Here in the States, a person could shop at Walmart and get good quality new balls at a low cost.

            I would never use a water ball for my course play. There is no assurance that the compression is correct or comparable to another ball in the pack.
