  • Iron Set Recommendations for 10 Handicapper

Ok, I've finally decided to get a new set of clubs. I am a 10-12 handicapper and have been for the last 15 years. I don't ever seem to play enough to get any better. Anyways, I have a set of Titileist DCI's that are about 10 years old. I like the look and feel of forged clubs and don't like the off-set oversized clubs. They looks weird to me. I am thinking of buying some sort of hybrid between cavity backs an blades, like the Mizuno MP-30 or the Taylor RAC LT's? I also heard the the Callaway X-Tours are nice but I don't think I'm quite good enough for those yet? My question is one, will new irons make any sort of difference? I know that woods do but I have not heard anything much about new iron developments and two what clubs would anyone recommend? Also, I recently to a local golf store and they said that I am surely a standard fit. I am 6'1" tall and about 200 lbs. They said I'd be standard lie and length. I have never got fit before so I'm wondering if I should have that done first as well. I know that I need stiff shafts my spoeed is around 100 mph.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    thanks!

Go for a combo set i would reccomend. I would also have you go into a fitter and see if you really are standard. If anythign go with a firm flex, but it is ultimately your choice

i like my titleist 762's DCI
they are 2-3 years old. They are not the OS. They were the first to add those carbon inserts. I really like these irons and you can get them for a steal on ebay. See if you can try a used set a local shop.

I would reccomend a combo set as well. Also, ALWAYS get fitted. Each company has a bit different standard lies and at 6'0" standard should be about 1/2 inch too short. If I'm not mistaken, standard clubs are designed for a 5'10" male.

So, by combo set you mean a hybrid between cavity back and blades? Something like Mizuno MP-30? Thanks for the advice on getting fitted, I will for sure do that.

One more question. I've had some Vokey wedges for awhile...about 5 years, do they ware out...grooves get dull? Also, bounce how do you know where you should be?

          thanks,

A combo set is pretty much as you described. You can also get a progressive irons that change with each iron from a full cavity back in the 3 iron to a full balde in the PW.

As for your irons, you can have the grooves re-cut. To give your older clubs a tune up, see your local professional club maker (or someone who does club repair regularily as a hobby.)

you can have grooves re-cut? I thought that was modifying your club? Id like to get my vokey re-cut...I thought about taking a dremel to it but am afraid I might break rules.

nice! I still think a dremel with a diamond tipped blade will work superbly!

If you keep them cleaned regularly and take care of them the grooves should be fine for a long time. Maybe you need quality clubs?

keep the groves absolutely clean and it shouldnt be a problem
