  • 10deg and 4W in bag. Add 7W?

    I have a 10 degree 454cc driver, which I hit 250-270, and a 4W that I hit around 225. My 3I goes about 190, which leaves me about a 35yd gap between clubs... and makes a 210yd par-3 a (more) difficult hole.

I can drop my PW (my 51 deg wedge goes about 115 which duplicates the PW, so it never comes out of the bag).

Should I expect greater-than-3I distance out of a 7W? I'm concerned that if I get a 5W, I'll have a club much closer to the 4W than right between the 4W and 7W.

    Should I drop my 4W and get a 3W & 5W? I like the 4W and I've never been able to hit a 3W real well (yes, I'm sure it's mental).

    Thoughts?

I think either a 7w or some hybrid ought to fill the gap for you.

Don't necessarily go for a 7W, go to a golf specialty store (Golf Town, Golf Galaxy, etc.) and find a club that fills in the distance you are looking for. Try out some woods and some hybrids.

I had a similar problem but mine was the gap between a 3I and a 5W. I tried a 7W for a while but found it to be a bit shorter than the 3I so I dropped it.

This is indeed my concern - that I might need a 6W.

As I said - don't worry about what the club number is, buy a club that fills the gap in your distances. Try out as many makes/models of both woods and hybrids until you find a club that gets the distance you are looknig for.

I've always wondered what sort of relationship people who say this sort of thing have with the shops that they buy clubs from. In my experience, shops are willing to let you hit into a net (in the store, with tape covering the club). This tells one nothing about distance (or what it feels like on grass for instance).

"Try out" on a course generally means buy it and you if you're not happy, they'll think about giving you store credit for something else. This is a long way different, IMHO, from "try it out".

In any case, I've purchased a 7W (Callaway Steelhead III, btw) and we'll see.

Head to a club with a driving range - the shop may be more than happy to let you hit some clubs there.

Where I'm at, there's a shop right on the golf course grounds, and you can hit a 'warmup' bucket to test a new club.

Then, there's a trade-in centre in the same plaza as an indoor golf simulator, where they let you take a few clubs and hit them.

Most of the golf superstores have simulators in them that tell you how far the ball is going, launch angle, swing path, clubhead speed, ball speed, etc. Find one of these stores (GolfTown, Golf Galaxy are two examples) and use their equipment to your advantage.
