  • tapered grips

A simple question: why are golf grips tapered? It's not as if the trail hand is smaller than the lead hand. Wouldn't the club feel better in the hands if the grips weren't tapered?

    Re: tapered grips

There is no particular reason for a tapered grip - just tradition. I purchased a used 3 wood a few years ago with a wrapped leather grip that was essentially the same thickness along the entire grip.

A few days ago I tried a friend's wedge on the practice range that had a grip that suddenly tapered smaller toward the butt of the club and larger down the shaft. It really felt strange at first - but after a few swings it actually felt like you could hold on better with your leading hand.

In summary - no particular reason for tapered grips that I know of - try different grip sizes and see.

IIRC, it had something to do with the old hickory shafts people used to use... and has since been the way grips are. Sorta like why you cut the end off the Easter ham.
