    Driver shafts?

    I'm trying to get some insight on what shafts I should try out. I have played a regular flex for the past 8 year's but the local pro said with my speed I should look into a firm flex. I don't know my speed's ( they wanted $35 to tell me the other day at a shop ) but playing my Taylor Made 360xd reg flex pretty good for 240 - 250 and if I had to guess I would say mid to low 90's.

    I hit the Titleist 905 with the aldila nv 65 stiff and with the tape and hitting rocks was landing in the 250 range, control was pretty good. Then tried a Cobra 440 with a YS5+ stiff felt really light and was a good 10 - 15 yrds shorter but control was about the same as the Titleist. So probally looking into a shaft with weight in between the 2 low 60's?

    I know all the shaft's are different, but can you take like the NV 65 in regular and trim it out to be firmer and if anybody has any suggestions on some different shafts to try I would appreciate it. I still want to hit the Pro LD from Accuflex, Graffaloy blue and the SK Fiber Pure Energy.

    I have hit most of those shafts, but one area that you might want to look at is launch angle. I like the Grafalloy Prolaunch because it definitely promotes a higher launch angle, like they say, plus it fits in the weight and spec catagory that you are looking for. I have one in an R7 and I love it. It got my launch angle back to 14 degrees, which for me is optimal. A lot of golfers can get more distance by increasing launch angle. But don't do it if you play against me...I still want to win!

      Hacker, unless you're swinging a 12 or 13 degree driver, your swing speed is probably high 90's or low 100's - for that kind of drive.

        Has anyone hit the Harrison Pro 2.5 Titanium? The specs are good - light weight, extremely low torque. I currently have the Striper Titanium in my driver and 3W which I LOVE, but the Pro 2.5 are supposed to blow the Striper away. I was wondering if anyone else here has tried both and has a comparison.

              The NVS is a bit looser than the NV. I tried the NV and liked it greatly but I have trouble controlling the NVS. The Grafalloy Blue is still one of the best out there. It and the NV are probably the class of the field just now.

              You will find that a regular flex in one of these shafts will be as stiff as a firm flex in and OEM shaft. Also I have tried the R the S and the X flex in the Blue and honestly found little difference. So I took a clubmakers advice and played the lightest most flexible shaft I could control.

              The Harrison 2.5 felt a bit harder than the Striper I tried them on 2 different clubs tho so I dont know how much of that was in the head. It depends on what you like, they are both great shafts and great value into the deal.

              Accuflex are good shafts as well but I have only tried the silly world champ long driver one which is all about distance. I cant say what the more normal ones are like. The Harmon Design shafts are costly but impressive, if you can try one of those as well.

                  Nice call on the Prolaunch! I went to a fitter to have thing's checked and swing speed avg was at 97. He had me hit my 9.5 and then threw me into a 10.5 and bam there's another 17 yrds for avg. The 10.5 got me in the mid 13's for launch angle.

                  He built me a KZG Gemini 10.5 with Prolaunch stiff. Got to play with it on league last night and I hit a few farther on a couple holes deeper then I've ever been before.

                    Can I change the shaft on my current driver easily.
                    I have a Taylor Made 860 Burner and I'm thinking about putting a quality shaft on it. I'd quite like to try the Grafalloy Blue.

                    Is it a sensible thing to do? Also how would you remove the original shaft?

                      One thing that is not mentioned is that if the old shaft is graphite, DO NOT twist the head to remove -you must pull straight back. Otherwise, the tip will be severely damaged and you will not be able to salvage the the old shaft (unless you were planning to tip the shaft by an inch or so....)

                        Will it make much difference or would i be better getting a better head?

                          The shaft is the engine of the club. A excellent shaft on a poor clubhead will still produve a good result as a poor shaft ona great head will result in a poor shot.
                          If not mistaken, the 860 Burner is not a conforming club head? If you are playing tournaments, a conforming clubhead would be something you should look into, otherwise it is fine, especially if you are looking for big distances off the tee.

                            You not mistaken it is a none conforming head under USGA rules but it's not banned under R&A regulations for another few years yet. Not sure what date but I think it's It's Jan 2008. I'm sure somebody will confirm it. I do live in the UK buy the way ;o)

                            Do you think it's worth changing the shaft then?

                              this is what happened 2 me

                              i had my cobra with the standard shaft it was rely whippy for an xs and i wasnt v impressed, i tried a few friends clubs (r7 w/ pro launch, r580xd w/ nvs, ignite w/ vista pro & erc w/ nv) pro launch was too high for me, not enough roll, the nvs & vista pro were v whippy, nv was jus right, we all av xs shafts n its gr8 fun avin long drive contests on a dogleg left par 5

                              dependin on what you need:
                              LOW TRAJ = nv or vista pro (slightly more whippy, cuz its lighter)
                              HI TRAJ = pro launch or nvs

                              i use an nv 75 xs & regularly drive 300 with the 9*

                              my swing speed is 110, n i hurt all over but its worth it, sowwi its long but i had 2 say, oh, n my longest was 376 with the wind 35 mph behind me
