    Re: 2005 Golf Balls

My take on golf balls improving your game ...

    Consistency is key.

Sure, you can find balls more appropriate for high or low handicappers, and it is probably wise to check the test-results and pick one that suits you somehow, but I find it more valuable to stick with the same ball if at all possible.

I usually play the Wilson "Jack" ball (low compression - no spin - distance ball ... like hitting a rock, really). It helps me keep the slice down and get som fair distance off the tee, which is nice.

However, the "Jack" is now discontinued, and I'm having all sorts of trouble trying to make my game stick with new balls. One shot I'm long - the next I'm short ... so I'm hitting every hazard out there at the moment.

I have now decided to go for the Callaway Big Bertha Blue ball for future use. It's still a distance kind of ball, albeit a lot more spin than the "jack", but I think I'm at a point in my game where I can handle that bit more spin and gradually begin moving my game towards control, even giving up a bit of distance if needed.

But hitting a Pro V1 for 3 holes, then hitting a Nike Power Distance, then a Strata, then a ... etc, will definately not do your game good.

      Re: 2005 Golf Balls

You guys know about http://www.lostgolfballs.com right? I'm not trying to put in a promo and I don't own stock BUT, if you buy the first quality balls from them, they might have a logo on them or a player's mark of some sort, but 9 out of 10 of them you can't even tell they've been hit once much less a few times. They're basically brand new balls for sometimes a third or quarter of the cost of new balls in the shop/store.

I tried them out earlier this summer after seeing their auctions on eBay, and I'll never buy golf balls for full price again.

I've been buying and loving the rev tour since they've become a half price ball (due to them being discontinued.)

I'm with you Ben - the Maxfli Rev Tours are sweet. I have been using the RevTours since mid August and I am very disappointed that Taylor Made has decided to discontinue these balls. Tons of spin and at $20/dozen very affordable compared to $60 for Pro V1s

Now apparently the MaxFli RedMax are supposed to be pretty much the same ball - new for 2006.

But I didn't take any chances - I ordered 30 dozen through my local SportChek.

                Re: 2005 Golf Balls

I had a spot of cash lying around (I get a golf budget from the Mrs, and convinced her to let me spend the surplus against the next two years' ball budget).

The problem is that this ball performs very, very well for me, and of course the price is right - I got 10% off the already low price of $20/dozen... so I basically got 3 dozen for free.

I don't lose many balls (sorry Gord), I just figured it'd be nice to play this ball for a few years, before having to switch.

The tough part is going to be balancing 360 balls...

                  Hello All,

Thought Mox's comment on playing the same brand to give consistancy more than valid.

As i often see discussion (pro and con) on "knock-off" clubs here-- What about knock-off brand balls? I personally got started somehow on Intech's Beta Ti. (Think i found one in the rough and liked it so bought a box and have just keep with them). I am sure they are a cheap chinese knock off of someone elses technology but i do gain a positive attitude playing new balls every round and am building up a good collection in the shag bag of same brand balls. Am always a bit apprehensive about getting what you pay for, and at $15 for 36 balls at the walmart I aint paying much so wonder what i am losing out on. As a 14 handicap dont think i can always appreciate the finer differences when i tried out a sleeve of Topflight and also Srixons.

I wouldnt have bought so many balls so far in advance, they will be off by the time you come to use em.

I moved to the Pro-V1x late this year after using the Callaway HX Red for a while, the Titleist is just a better ball than the rest. I dont think I will change from it for the forseeable future.

What do you mean? I'm pretty sure golf balls don't have a 'shelf life'.

I think they do Lowpost, they absorb moisture from the air. I dunno if it makes a lot of difference but I've heard it robs distance and makes them a little less resilient.

I could be wrong......if someone knows I am for sure, let me know and then I will go and stock up myself...

I currently use the Pro V1's and like them. I buy them from LostGolfBalls on Ebay, but I am looking for less expensive balls that will perform close to them and maybe not scuff as much. I swing hard and drive the ball 280-300 with a slight fade. When I hit approach shots I sometimes spin them off the green on bent grass greens. If I hit them high enough I can get them to drop and stop. What ball can I buy for about 2/3rds the price of the Pro V1's that will be close to what I am hitting?

Can someone explain the difference? I'm confused between a "distance" ball and a "more spin" ball.

Personally, I buy pond balls and hope to keep my costs down, I loose a lot of balls! But if I actually knew why I should buy one kind over another other than the ones on sale.

                                Much obliged.
