    Re: 2005 Golf Balls

As the names imply, a distance ball is designed to fly longer, a spin ball to spin more. You want distance to hit it long off the tee and spin to get more control around the greens.

Most middle to cheap balls are either distance or spin, not both. The expensive balls like Titleist ProV1, HX Tour, Bridgestone B330, Nike One etc are designed to both spin well and fly quite a long bit.

So a distance ball goes farther -- obvious -- but does it slice more? Does it go farther because it's rock hard. A distance ball has less spin?

Will a "more spin" ball help keep the ball going straight or make it curve more? Wouldn't a "more spin" ball have more lift since it's spinning more?

As a beginner can I expect a specific kind of ball to help me or hinder me? I look at the ball rating chart or the selection at the pro shop and completely draw a blank. I can buy a glove easily enough -- it fits or it doesn't. But balls?

When they say "more spin" how much more RPM are we talking about?

I've tried Top Flite distance and Infinity more spin and Sirixon "something or other". For Xmas I got a box of Titleist "DT" -- not the real expensive ones.

To tell you the truth I've been buying whatever is yellow because they're easier to find in the rough!

'Distance' balls are nothing of the sort. Pro-V1x, HX Tour and the like are all longer than the cheaper balls. What they mean by distance is that an NXT Distance (as they used to make) is longer than an NXT Tour.

The main advantage to the distance balls is that they spin much less which makes them more accurate. If you arent too straight you are better off with the cheaper ball cos its straighter and any distance gained from the longer ball will be lost by going off line.
