  • jumbo heads

My current driver is an inexpensive Cougar X-cat. The head is about 350 cc. I hit the ball about 250 yards with it, sometimes straight, sometimes with a nasty slice. Although I'm not about to spend a lot of money on a driver at this stage of my game, I'm thinking about whether it might be a good idea to get one of those big 460 cc drivers. There was a recent discussion on here about whether those things only hide faults in the swing.

Interestingly, I can hit the ball almost as far off the tee with my 3 hybrid, and usually dead straight. Do the jumbo drivers tend to give more distance, swing for swing?

I dont think a bigger head will you give more distance, however it will mean that a higher percentage of your shots will be "good hits"
the sweet spot is bigger and even if you miss it, the less sweet spots are not as dead as on the smaller heads.
A toe or heel shot that feels terrible will probably still fly 200m straight enough, it wont hide the fact (for you) that it was a bad hit.

      Re: jumbo heads

I'm actually part way through Tom Wishon's 'The search for the perfect club'.

Tom discusses oversized heads. While they offer more MOI at impact (reducing distance lost on off-center hits), it means that they're also more prone to twisting at impact with the same off center hits. Thus, while you'll be closer to the hole, you may very well be much more left-or-right of target than you would with a smaller-headed driver.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stick with my 350 cc Cougar for now. My drives with it have been getting straighter. When I'm consistent enough that I think I can benefit from a better quality driver, I'll revisit the question. I can't see any great advantage to getting a jumbo driver now.
