  • Help with Heavenwood 3H

    Hi,

I used to be able to hit this club very well, better than any other in my bag. Now, it is the only club I cannot hit decently. I hit my irons and drivers fairly straight, but every hit with the 3H results in a severe pull and hook. It's almost as if the ball would do a corkscrew if it had enough altitude.

I think it has to do with how I address the ball with the club. The club just doesn't "feel" right in my hands when I address the ball squarely, and I naturally address the ball with the clubface quite closed (which would explain the hook). My question is, does this club have a natural draw bias or is it designed like the Taylormade R5 D with a slightly closed face? Or am I just addressing the ball incorrectly with the club?

    Thanks,
    B

Well, the callaway site isn't much help - so my natural assumption is that the club is sole weighted (like a lot of hybrids), but square faced and somewhat offset, with no ball flight bias.

The pull is an out-to-in swing path, and can be simulated by playing the ball too far forward in your stance (when the club is coming back in). The hook is an even more closed face after coming out-to-in.

But if the club is offset, then the likelihood of shutting the face increases (after all, the whole point to offset is to give the club more time to shut the face).

So, how does this club compare to the rest of your clubs? More or less offset? Square at setup, or more open or closed?

      Thanks for your reply.

What you say makes total sense.

So that's the thing - I know I setup with this club with an "extra" closed clubface which is probably exacerbating the problem. I think I'm setting up like I would a driver and keeping the rear of the clubhead off of the ground and thus closing the clubface. When I setup with the clubhead lying naturally on the ground, the clubface is pretty square (or at least as square as my other clubs). Does that make any sense? I didn't realize this last point until I got home and asked my roommate if he saw a severe offset or not.

I've read so many good reviews of this club that I think I'm going to give it another go at the range tonight, setting up as I would an iron shot and letting the clubhead rest naturally on the ground.
