    More roll on chips

    I have 3 588 RTG wedges, and I would like more roll on chip shots around the green. Often the PW gives me the roll, but tends to be too hot off the face and is therefore difficult to control. I want to do what the pros do when they hit near the apron then let it roll at least two or even three times the carry distance. Does anyone find that the RTGs do not allow this to happen much, or is just my technique? My shots tend to have about 80 carry and 20 roll, even with the ball back in the stance. Would something like a chrome or gunmetal provide better roll?

    For a different carry-to-roll ratio, you need to use a different club. The rule of thumb is that the PW will provide a 1:1 ratio (roll 1 foot for every 1 foot carried), and a 7i has a 1:4 ratio (roll 4 feet for every 1 foot carried).

      The roll can be adjusted by the positio of the ball in your stance and opening and closing the face on your club.

      I try to chip with my PW when I can (only because I don't have time to practice chipping with all my irons). I my PW usually has a 1:3 ratio of carry:run. I have the ball slightly back of centre and use a putting stroke and it comes out very low.

      As Ben said above, if you are chipping with your PW now and it's not rolling far enough, move to a less lofted club. Practice with different clubs until you get the results you are looking for.

        The problem is that anything less lofty than my 51 deg gap wedge tends to be too low on certain situations and just run off. I personally don't believe in roling the right forearm over the left will make significant difference at impact, and if you do want it to roll on more it will have to be at a much more aggresive swing, but the short game has a finesse swing. I try not to open the club too often, so I do rely on ball position. I need to get down the practice green again!

          The chip stroke is the same as a putting stroke - NO WRIST MOVEMENT.

          If the ball is running to far, you hit it too hard, not a problem with the club you used. You just need to practice to be able to determine what a feel shot is going to do.

            I use an 8i whenver possible around the green. Just a little carry and a lot of roll. Much more consistent than my lofted wedges

              I like the pw, it gives a good bounce onto the green and you still get roll. But if you have way to much green then an 8 iron would be better. if I don't have much green I'll try a 60% lw. But where ever possible I use a putter.

                I tend to use my PW for chipping off/arround the fringe of the green. As Gord said, your wrists should have limited movement. I definitely dont keep my wrist still like putting as I still want to have some feel to the swing. the 1:1 ratio is good since its easier to judge. I would only use a 7iron if it was a long chip with lots of green to work with.

                However, what I do to get the ball to roll more is:

                - Put ball slightly back in the stance
                - lean slightly to the left side
