  • Iron Recommendations

My wife is purchasing a new set of Irons for my birthday. I finally just started taking lessons. My handicap is around 25. What would everyone recommend. I've looked at the 04' Big Bertha's & the Ping G2. Need some good advice.

    Thanks,

    Re: Iron Recommendations

The first piece of advice I would give you is to buy them off ebay, regardless of which ones you buy. You will save a ton of money, and you can get new ones, too. I bought an $800 set for $525 plus shipping. They had been played 3 or 4 times.

As to the actual irons, both of the ones you mentioned would be good starter sets - very good, actually - that will allow you to grow with them. They should last you a few seasons, easy.

Great advice. Mine only problem is that Im going to get custom fitted, so how would I be able to purchase online & get them customized as well?

Depends on what kind of Mizunos you are talking about. Mizuno generally makes clubs that are for the better players. Their top end range are very good but the lower end range is average.

Get fitted by a competent fitter, take the recommendations, then make your purchase.

Most fitters offer the price of the fitting back if you buy through them, but as has been stated, you can often find them way cheaper than the price of a fitting knocked off.

My handicap is about a 25 and I recently bought the G2's. I really love them irons. Has given me about 10-15 yards more and is very forgiving. Scored my lowest game ever (A 92) and that's after scoring a 50 on the back 9.

One piece of advice. Get yourself fitted dynamically. Get your specs and then buy them on-line. You will probably save about $200+ The lie angle can be adjusted later for upto 3* if you do not get the exact lie angle that you need.

I would buy steel shafts and the flex would depend on your swing speed.

Thought about going to Edwin Watts, Double Eagle (Local Shop) or ProGOlf to get fitted. My instructor said that he could do it as well. He may do it for free. Whats the advantage or disavantage to doing it a "store" or local golf pro?

                    Re: Iron Recommendations

IF (and that's a big if) the store has an on-site club builder, chances are they also have a competent fitter. But some stores (Golf Galaxy is notorious) just stick you on a launch monitor, read your average swing speed, and recommend a shaft stiffness. BAD BAD BAD. Well, I shouldn't say that - it's a good start, but far from complete.

You should get on a launch monitor, swing some clubs off a lie board, try clubs of different length and lie, and hit some actual balls with some impact tape before you buy a club.

I totally agree on the impact tape. It is a must. Gives you a good idea where the ball contacts the club.
