Re: Why are handicaps the same as 50 years ago?

I think in a lot of cases technology has hindered rather than helped. Nowadays so many people think they can buy a good game and spend money on the latest driver/iron set rather than on lessons. Also as clubs are generally more forgiving (and balls travel further and go straighter) they are happy enough hacking around and hitting the occassional decent shot rather than grooving a repeating swing.

I think technology has made the game a lot more fun to play, and has allowed the very bad player to keep playing when he would have quit 30
years ago, I'm only and 10, but if this was the 1960's and I was shanking
all my musselback irons, I don't think I would keep shelhing out 50 bucks
for a round of golf.so if only the good players are playing, the handicaps
      would be lower.
