  • R&A ,USPGA getting in the groove.

" Top players dont care about hitting fairways.Modern wedges and balls give control, even from deep rough".Excerpt from article by leading Scottish writer on golf. Both controlling bodies are concerned about the practise of having grooves on wedges sharpened. The following statistics quite revealing.Last year the top 3 players on the PGA tour-Woods,Singh,Mickelson finished 188,147,161,respectively in driving accuracy.

On a related theme, if the long hitting elite are happier hitting a wedge from the rough than a longer shot from the fairway then maybe the authorities should ensure that the rough at 300 yards + is really penal.

I'd have thought that this would help maintain the distance / accuracy balance in the game - and make it more interesting to watch than the current boom and pitch.

A better way of protecting the great courses than just lengthening them?

I'm looking at the Buick open. How come everytime these guys hit into the woods they have a clear shot to the green and I am always behind a tree???
