  • Club fitting questions.

I am in the market for a new set of irons and I also want to get fitted for shafts for my woods. Current clubs are Titleist DCI 962s, 1/2" short and 2 degrees flat. Woods are 3wd - TM R580, TM R7 - stiff, 9.5 degrees. I've been as low as a 6 handicap but back problems have prevented me from practicing and playing as much as I like so I'm hovering around a 10 to 12 right now. My swing is pretty consistent but I'm hitting everything off the toe with my irons. I'm hitting my woods pretty good. My question is, how much consistency should I develop before getting fitted for a new set of irons and wood shafts? I went for just a rough fitting a couple months ago where one of the pros told me I needed to go 2 degrees upright which was 4 degrees more than I was fitted with my Titleist irons a few years prior (2 degrees flat). I couldn't believe this was right. Even with the new Titleist irons. I went home and played with my swing for a few hours and found I was regripping at the top of my backswing and shutting down the face dramatically at impact. This was causing the toe to hit first. This caused a little skepticism about being fitted. I didn't understand why this guy didn't see this instead of just telling my I needed 2 degrees upright. It's not like he was pressed for time. I was there for almost an hour and a half and he was having me hit all kinds of different heads and shafts. We were having a great time but again I'm hesitant about my next fitting for new clubs. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated. Sorry for the rant.

    Thanks...

    Re: Club fitting questions.

    Hi There,

We all develop our swings some get better and quicker swings, more on plane and of course some the other way, so your fitting will change with swing changes.

I used to be 2 degrees flat, I thought this was due to my height 5 ft 10 inches, however my last fitting last year when I brought my new irons I was pretty standard, moved to a stiff shaft, with a standard lie, I know how to fit clubs so I know it was correct.

I suggest you get a proper fitting, your clearly a good player so you know the benefits.

    Regards

    Ian.
