I'd like to hear from people that have used 7 & 9 Woods. I played with someone using a 7W last time and he was hitting it beautifully to 180yards or even greater. What are the average distances (just for information) for these woods and what are their lofts? I would like to find out more before I buy any of them. I'm on handicap 15 (55 years old) and I can't hit my 3 and 4 irons consistently, never did! Appreciate any advice.

It's impossible to say how far they should be hit. I can hit a 7 wood over 220, but it is different for each person. Instead of saying you need a 5 wood to replace your 3 iron, you need to look at it as you need a club that will hit a certain distance. For example, if you hit your 5 wood 220 yards and your 5 iron 160 yards. If you are looking to replace your 3 and 4 iron, you would want two clubs where 1 would hit approx 200 and another that hits about 180 yards, the number on the club isn't important.
As far as lofts go here is what to expect, +/- 1 degree (or so):
3 wood 15*
5 wood 18*
7 wood 21*
9 wood 24*
Many people are switching to hybrids to replace their long irons, that may be the way to go for you if you are looking to replace your 3 and 4 woods.
Remember, replace clubs with distances, not numbers!!!! -

Go for the hybrid. IMHO, the 7W and 9W are passe. The only strong case for them I think would be if you really need to use them to get more roll.
I don't have 3i and 4i, but a M4 hybrid which replaces them. From there a driver, 3 wood and 5 wood should about cover the distance gaps? As Gord said it's more about the distance gaps than the numbers, but I like the hybrid because not only can you hit it off the deck easily, you can also hit it off the rough

I used to use a 7W because I couldn't hit my 3 iron very well.
I found I could hit the 7W well but it was quite hard to use as an approach shot as it had too much roll and I used to always end up off the back of the green.
I then decided to ditch it and improve my 3 iron which I have done and its a much better option for approach shots.Comment
