  • Replacing 3 iron with Hybrid?

Have started to consider replacing my 3 iron with an equivalent Hybrid after watching an interview with a female golf professional on the Australian Golf Show.

Discussion was that she had replaced her 2 and 3 iron with a 21 degree Hybrid. She strongly suggested that others do the same as it has been most benefical.

It improved her game in many ways, getting out of the rough easier and with impressive distance and around the greens to putt on to or bump and run.

I'm considering purchasing a Taylormade Hybrid. I'm currently using RAC LT11 irons.

I'm thinking if the Hybrid does the job of the 3 iron and value adds to my game - why not?

    What do you think?

I replaced my 3 and 4 irons with a Nike 22 degree hybrid and it's made a big difference in my game, not only am I able to get out of the rough easier but I'm getting much more distance not to mention it's much easier to hit. I say go for it, at the very worse you can go back to your 3 and 4 irons.

      hi nickers,
the longer clubs have always caused me problems so i have bought a cobra 4R/23 degree hybrid tp replace 3&4i and the benefit to my game has been immediate.
cuts through the rough like knife through butter and distance wise there is no comparison now looking at GIR on par 5's where previously that just wouldnt happen!
      go for it!

Slats if you don't mind me asking, how has changing to the hybrid allowed you to get GIR on par 5s when previously you couldn't? Did the hybrid really add so much more distance to your 3i? Just curious Thanks!

Well I read this post and I totally agree with what all the people are saying.
          and that is

"Get yourself a Hybrid". I have never looked back I chose to go for a No.2 iron equivalent Rescue dual taylor made with a stiff graphite shaft. I still use my 3 & 4 irons when on the fairway in certain places though so dont rule them out all together as they still are useful. The main places I use my hybrid is often in the rough or if my lie is not good.

          Hope it helps

          Cheers

            Hi Simon,

This is possible as the hybrids do give you more accuracy in your shots and also it does depend on the hole your playing. i.e. if you needed to draw a shot to get to the pin then with the hybrid (This is for the taylor made weighted ones) you can changes the weights to help you make this shot. Where as your strike with a 3 iron does take lots of practice to do this type of shot.

I dont think its a question of more distance that you get but that your hitting shots that one are more accurate and two you can maninpulate the ball more compared to a normal iron shot (Unless your a pro), which if done correctly will get you on the green in GIR.

            Cheers

I think a hybrid is a great idea. I carry 3 myself (although I'm about to switch models - but still keep hybrids). Anything longer than a 5 iron is hybrid country for me.

                hello simon
                a typical example for you
hole 16 525yd par 5 at my local course would go like this driver goes 220 straight then poor 3i maybe 140 fade to the right and then 4i either topped or sliced then wedge out of rough hopefully on green!
this tuesday night i hit a good drive probably 240 then i hit my baffler hybrid which as greg j likes to say was "godly accurate" and not short off 200yds and then i hit a nice pw and 2 putted.
so there's me parring a par 5! without a hybrid it just wouldnt happen without the increased distance and accuracy!

I'm with LowPost. I carry Adams Idea 4 and 5 i-Woods. I will carry an Adams Idea 5 iron also, but usually it'll be the i-Wood. The i-Woods give me consistent strikes and iron-like accuracy.

BTW, LP, what are you switching to?

Well, it's time for the merry-ho-round.

I'm going to try the PureFit VooDie in candy apple red (those Synchron Medic's made an impression).

If they don't work, I'll try either Wishon 321's or Wishon 785's.

If they don't work, I'll buy another set of Innovex Hybrids.

                      Well guys,

Today I picked up and have got the use of a demo Talyormade Dual Rescue Hybrid for the next couple of weeks. It's 22 degree with a rflex graphite shaft.

Be interested to see how it goes. The next decision will be will I go with graphite or steel. I've got graphite in my woods and steel in my irons.

Let you know how I get on.

                        Hi VP,
I am sure you will love this club as I love my one. I have a graphite stiff shaft as I mainly use this club in the rough and I find that the rflex has too much flex when I am swinging it. I feel that with the graphite shaft I can shape my shots more easily than with a steel ones.
                        Hope it helps
                        Cheers

That describes my game to a tee.

Hit my driver poorly yesterday on a 320 dogleg left par 4 with a pond. I had about 180 yards to carry the pond with about 20 between the pond and the green on the other side. Took dead aim with my 19* hybrid and rolled right up to the green. I carry a 25 and 19 degree and 5-9,pw,gw and sw. I still carry but really never use a 3 and 5 wood.

I recently upgraded my Rescue Mid 22 (4) to the Dual TP, marvellous piece of engineering! Both give me more distance, but I wanted the stiff shaft as the regular felt as if the head was going to snap off at impact.

I've been using hybrids to replace my 3 & 4 for about a year now, and will never look back. According to Taylor Made, the 22 degree (equivalent to the 4 iron) will go slightly further, as you would normally swing the hyrbid 5mph faster, and plus the improved MOI, lower Centre of Gravity and larger sweetspot will also help. Particularly useful for when you need to hit a very low chip shot from under a tree, or long bunker shots.

I have been using hybrids for about 3 years. My original was something my wife bought - a 911 (rescue) club - 21 deg so about like a 3. It was OK, but had a cheap composite shaft.

I made up my current hybrids from components - I have a #2 (19 deg replaces 5-wood) and a 4 (24 deg). I now only carry irons down to a 5. I find the hybrids easier to hit than woods or irons. Unless I think I can reach a green with my 3-wood, I lay up slightly shorter with the hybrid 2 or 4. Just bunt it down the fairway and keep the ball in play!

The heads are Powerplay 5000. They look something like the Ben Hogan heads - Nice visual look , to me anyway.

You can put one of these together with a steel shaft for about C$30.00, but I have used the top of the line Irod hybrid graphite shafts, so completed clubs were about C$65.00 each. Still a lot better than the US$100-200 I see the name brand units advertised for.

I don't usually use knock-off clubs, but I really like the Powerplays. (My irons are Titleist, my driver is a Taylormade R5 and my only other wood is a Ben Hogan 3-metal). I won't get into putters!!
