i was in your shoes just over 12 months ago and i settled on a set of mizuno mx15's i love em they get the ball airborne quickly even the long irons and have a nice feel to them!

I just went from some Mizuno MX17s to Cobra 3400s, I prefer the cobras by a long way..

Whatever clubs you get, try and get them custom fitted...

I have had Pings all my life, well for the last 14 years. The eye twos were great. The Ping G5's.......like buttah. But I guess I am partial to them. I hit every iron I could check out from edwin watts and used a methodical method of driving range eliminations. Pick your favorites and get loaners from a shop if able and do the field test and yes get fitted. you will not be sorry. Don't buy something on someones word (salesman are sometimes told to push certain sets), it has to fit you!! Best of luck.

I wouldnt put too much emphasis on the brand. The more important things to consider would be that you get cavity back (more forgiving) Also i would recommend steel shaft rather than graphite. I would go to a coach and ask for advice before purchase. WHY NOT BUY A USED SET first which would be less of an expense to you.?

i prefer pings, and if i was you id go with the g2's or g5's. Im sure you can get a good set on ebay because they are very expensive new, especially if you buy them from a golf shop like golf galaxy. I'm actually looking at the price guide and the markup per club is 30 some dollars.

get fitted, dont just buy any dot color ping on ebay. at the very least check out there webfit

I would go to eBay and buy used Adams Idea irons. They are very forgiving and are very economical. You can find an Adams Idea 4 iron-wood for probably $35 and 5-PW for under $100.

hello alstock,

i would have the big bertha 's because it is a beginners club it will have higher loft [not much though], they are also easy to hit. the os2 is a mid handicappers club really.

If your addicted already like the rest of us, I suggest you see a club fitting pro you trust.

One important part of club selection for me is, how they look when I'm standing over them.

i recently brought a set of mizuno mx15s as i am a mid handicapper but i tried various clubs in the testing nets but the mizunos had that feel that i like in a set of clubs and knowing that i am able to hit well with them is always pleasing.

How would one test what irons are good? It's a very personal thing? Some one likes blue and other prefers red?

On advice was to get clubs and hit some balls at a range. Is there an other way?

The parts to watch are grip, shaft and club head. For me one important issue is the price. (Though, I do not want to buy two times.. )

So how can I learn what clubs are good for me?

Alas, there is no other way. In fact, I would hit them on grass if you have the option.

Cavity backs come in all shapes and sizes. The dimensions of the sole, the type of shaft, etc all make the choice a very individual one. I am currently in the market for my first "good" set of clubs. Initially, I sat in the store and decided I liked club..."A", but after I got out on the course with a set of "B's", I decided I wanted to look a little more.

My advice is:

1.) go to a PGA pro and take a lesson. getting a good swing will change the choice for your clubs.

2.) After said lesson think ahead:

Irons: I will buy steel shafts, something more of a 'uniflex' since my swing speed is gonna change and I already swing a 7 iron from 150. Graphite is very comfortable but the flex points can be a little overwhelming for a beginner. Nonetheless a good fitter can set them up right for you.

Right now I'm looking at the Nike NDS. I will stick with forged clubs and always hit a few balls. I look for a solid feel at impact and little 'vibration'.

For Driver, I'm going to stick with my Mizuno stiff flex driver until I have a better idea of what my swing is going to turn out like. Right now I'm driving about 270 yards but I'm in the process of overhauling my swing. I have a friend who is a scratch golfer who swings his irons at the same distance as me, but I out drive him by 80 yards. It's not all about distance.


3.) Get them fit so that you'll grow into them. I've heard read about putting 6 degrees of lie into a club etc. My question is: "should I be fixing my clubs to adapt to my swing fault or should i be fixing my swing fault?"....This is where a lesson will help before you go buy clubs. The hundred bucks you spend will come back to you when you know more what you are looking for. With that said...

Everything is cheaper on Ebay, but you might be happier getting your clubs at a pro shop where the club fitter will help you enjoy them much much more.
