I HIGHLY recommend you consider the MacGregor M455. These are similar to clubs you mentioned but...come std with Rifle tour flighted shafts (lower irons designed to fly higher) and they are forged. They are considered game improvement. They have some offset and wider soles than other MacGregor irons. These irons are LONG and feel like butter when you hit sweet but...very forgiving when you don't.

I got the M565 (Macs) but know others that have the 455. Plus, you can get 'em brand new on ebay for around 200.00

I think that I am finding my swing and I am about ready to get new irons.
Steel shafts sounds good. I think that I could play with a regular length shaft of 1 cm longer. Checked my shaft length with a club fitter. Grip is regular.

With current irons I hit toe first. Ball might be too close or shaft a little short.

I do not want to hit any balls from a mat at a range any more. I think it fill spoil ones contact to the ball. And mat does not tell if you are coming from outside to inside -> slicing. (It does not show with short irons playing from a mat, but when playing from grass or during a round, it will spoil your came.)

hi all
i have played pings for over 30 years now and never once blamed the clubs once on a bad shot, i know it me not the clubs, i play with others that are always blaming the clubs for bad shots, think knowing my clubs dont hit bad shots help my game and dont give me something else to blame for my bad shots. get fitted for clubs they make such a diffrance, and get something you feel happy with in your hands.

I agree with the comment about playing from the mat, it lets you get away with fat shots much too easily.

As for your iron choice, I love my mizuno mx-23's. I like my clubs as they are performance clubs that that are also quite forgiving on mishits. Mishits still feel like mishits unlike some game improvement irons, so I can feel where I am going wrong.

That said, it's only my personal experience. All these recommendations are just recommendations. Nothing can replace going out and trying them yourself.

I am a beginner. Which set would you recommend. Callaway/Cleveland/Taylormade. How is Wilson as a brand. It is normally 30% cheaper then Ping and Taylormade.

Thanks, but still some brands are better then others. A good set is 1000USD for wilson while Ping is 2500 USD. I want to be somewhere in between.

i have been with pings 30 years and love them, i have been thinking of a set of ping clones with them made up to my speck. sill trying to make up my mind as i cant aford new pings so its between second hand pings and clones.

I know Ping's the best. I once tried it. But its frightfully expensive. Second hand clubs are hard to find where I live. Quality is very poor. Let me ask you which is better Graphite or steel shaft for an amateur. I play 18 handicap.

i fing graphite in the drivers and fairway woods and steel in the irons, if you swing slow and need more distance graphite can give you another 5/10 yards but i find i get more control from steel shafts,

I talked my buddie into playing golf about 3 yrs ago. Didn't take long to get him hooked...*S* (Now, I'm responsible for his insanity..

)

He had no idea what to buy and thought Walmart would be the best choice...

I took me a while to change his mindset and explain to him, the need of a fitted clubset. He thought, as a starter he would not deserve a good set of clubs. He associated the word "fitting" with pro Golf.
The Pro with the local Golfcourse is endorsed by Adams and sold him a set of Adams Ideas Irons.
Instead of 3 and 4 irons they use those hybrids.... and even on a bad hit, they roll forever.

I played his set the other day and there are nice to play. Good balanced and easy to swing, very forgiving.

If I change my Set I would either stay with Taylor Made or go to Mizuno.

My Brother will be the next target... he is getting eager to hit balls. So, definitly get him fitted pretty soon.

Give the Callaway x-18's a try. I just traded in my Ping i-3s for these clubs and I absolutely love them. Compared the carry on my i-3 6 iron to the Callaway. The Callaway flew higher and approximately 10 yards longer. I have taken the clubs to the course this week. Hitting my irons straighter and hitting one less club. I highly recommend them. Purchased at Golf Smith for $699 in U.S. dollars.

As I mentioned above, I plan to hook my brother on golf. I was browsing the Web for reviews and prices.

The Taylor Made RAC OS2 would be my choice for him. Custom fit, they are 520.- Bucks, 3-PW+AW)
Those are close to my 200 Series Irons. (Maybe I get the OS2 for me and give'm my old set

). I did never regret spending the money for my "starter"-set (the 200 series). I think the main points for a beginner club are: Cavity back and low center of gravity.
It doesn't help you to buy clubs with heads of the size of an frying pan.... you still gotta learn how to swing.
With a decent set of clubs, you know you can't blame them....

one excuse gone....*lol*
