  • Need grip help please.....

    Hi....

    High handicap newbie here...

2/3yrs ago, I purchased a set of used Taylor-made firesole clubs. I would like to regrip them myself. I've read some of the previous posts on the how-to DIY side of things and I think I can handle it. But what concerns me is how do I know what size grip to buy??? I am not under a time constraint so there is no real hurry to get this done. I have yet to Re-grip them since I've had them. But I do plan on looking at the kits offered thru www.Golfsmith.com. Thanks in advance for the help. Marc

Go to your pro shop. They usually have some demo grips. Grab a few, and see what you like then order them online.

There are usually (3) sizes to pick from (grips): regular, mid and jumbo. I regrip all my clubs myself. I tried mid size on a couple of my woods (to try and prevent a hook). They felt good at first , then during the course of the round they felt "fat" . Jumbo generally are for "older" golfers (or maybe more mature golfers!) or for arthritic hands. Regular grips can be adjusted with more than one layer of tape (if they feel too small). By adding 3-4 layers of tape, a regular grip in effect becomes a "mid" size grip. Too small a grip promotes a hook; too big promotes a slice .

        Hope this helps

          Thanks lefty...
I will try the regular with 1 layer of tape. I bought the clubs used. I will check out the tape that is on them. It feels good the way it is. Middle & Ring fingers Just touch the palm slightly. I read that is the way to measure fit around grip. Hopefully all will go ok...1st time and all that. Thanks. Marc

Actually , your middle & ring finger should just touch the thumb muscle.
Most folks play with too small of a grip and don't even realize it. This is what my local fitter told me. I went up from regular to jumbo and what an amazing difference. I am not a mature man ,38 , and have average sized hands with longer than average fingers.

I have large hands but short fingers. However this combination plays out, I am about 1/16 oversized. I use Golf Pride Midsize Dual Durometer with a single layer of double sided tape. This grip fits perfectly in my hands. I used to use multiple layers of tape (varying lengths for varied thickness - headcase thing). I had a formula to get my prefered size and it took several layers of Duct tape and the final full layer of double sided tape. I used Duct tape for ease of tape removal when regripping. It does work. Now I don't have to use it.

The best plan is a digital caliper. The core size of the grip and the butt size of the shaft are the two numbers you're looking for.

'Standard' = matching core and butt sizes, plus 1 layer of 2 sided (grip) tape.

1/32 oversize = EITHER core size .020" smaller than the butt, or matching core and butt sizes, plus 2 layers of buildup tape (buildup tape is assumed to be .010 thick).

If you grip with air, you could start to really experiment with what you like.
