lee westwood still uses ping zing 2 and there at least 17 years old but he thinks there so forgiving he wont change, there a few players the have kept there iron heads but changed the shafts but most pros change up to the new model of the company they are with. not all new clubs feel as good as older model and it has nore to do with feel that if there better, i would say new clubs are more forgiving that older apart from ping zings.

So most of the extra yardage is coming from ball technology?

I think I'll keep the clubs and buy new balls.
Since I don't play much, I don't need to buy balls. The ones I'm playing with are about 7 years old.

think the distance is more the new shafts, and not so much the heads, the heads have more forgiveness on miss hits. lowpost seems to be the guy that knows about shafts but he away getting a snip, lol

Bernhard Langer used the same clubs for around 15 years whilst golf technology was taking leaps and bounds forward. Speaks volumes to me

I remember telling the pro who was giving me lessons how much better I was hitting a new club.

He told me that he found that the improvement from new clubs only ever lasted until the Mastercard was paid off.

Dead right too.

My first set of clubs were my fathers old set. Being a person who likes steel shafts in my irons, I can't say that I see any difference in performance between the old irons and the new ones. The big thing for me is the new driver technology. That most certainly has improved. Things like increased head size, different steel and titanium, better shaft technology and removeable/interchangeable weights(in some drivers)have, IMHO, made drivers that will get more distance with more forgiveness then the older drivers. Also, the weight systems and clubs that have different head shapes to lower the center of gravity(ie. Cleveland Hi Bore) have made it easier for the average weekend duffer to hit straighter and longer then they could before.

On the other hand there are those anomalies like my nephew who can take an old wooden driver and hit it 270-280 yards. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. That was one of those days where I felt like I was absolutely crushing the ball and everything was going perfect until I hit a beautiful drive down the center of the fairway on a par 4, 344 yard hole. I was walking on air up to my ball, which was sitting roughly 70 yards from the center of the green(274 yard drive give or take an inch), then I look ahead and this 15 year old kid outdrove me by about 12 yards with a club that was as old as me. That'll knock you off cloud nine. LOL

we have a old guy that still plays with two wodden shafter clubs, a wedge and a 9 iron and hes deadly from 80 yards to the pin and he also has a putter thats older than me, and hes in his late 70 and boy can this guy putt, he dont play more than 9 holes now but its like going back in time playing with him, every thing is hit so low, and its all pitch and run too, he gets a shot at every hole and there only two holes that he cant get on green in two.
its the other way here you out drive him by 50 yards but he just hits a little runner onto the green every time. not always about distance off the tee.

That's true bill. IMO, good iron play is much more important than distance with your driver, however, you've got to admit it is an amazing thing to see someone hit a 25-30 year old wooden driver better and farther then most golfers hit the "new technology".

That's probably because we play hockey from early August thru to June of the following year. lol

I have had my Ping Eye 2s for around 20 years. I love them. So much in fact that I recently upgraded my shafts to graphite. Truth be told I have tried other clubs from cleveland, lynx, and titleist but I always went back to my Pings. Now I know new clubs i.e. the Ti Drivers can go deep. That's technology. But after that we are only talking anywhere from 220-30 yards in. If that were the case then I would suggest not getting a whole new set of clubs just perhaps a new driver and those hybrids. You can do away with your longer irons and use these hybrids. They are the newest innovation and perhaps the best investment.
