Im currently using some "generic" game improvement clubs with a huge cavity and offset. Ive been using these clubs for about 8 months now and Im actually shaping shots pretty well with them and im having alot of fun doing it, I can fade or draw low or high whenever I want to but Im ready for some real clubs. Im just wondering if im ready for the blades or should I go for the clubs in between blades and game improvement?

Re: Blades??
Seems like you've got real clubs to me.
The 'knock' against Cavs or GI irons is that they're harder to work. There's a thread around here where Gord and I debated this. Ultimately, yes, Cavs are harder to work than blades. But the key is harder, not impossible. Just like blades are harder to hit the same distance repeatably than cavs. Not impossible, but harder.
Now, if you find you're hitting the ball too high, or getting too much draw, then move to lower offset. But who wouldn't want the distance forgiveness of a cavity back iron?
Now, that said, I just bought a set of tiny blades to practice with all winter. I'm going to match them to my gamer set, and practice with them so that I've got an 'ultimate feedback' set to hit all winter.

Re: Blades??
hi
if you look at the pros the use pings you will see the have cavity and not true blades and its the same with some other makes the pros use, this idea that all pros use blade is false and some pros cant play at all with blades and find the shape and control the ball better with cavity back clubs, it you are shapping and controling the ball well then why change, you may have to alter your swing or at lest tweek it a bit if you change to blades. clubs that match you swing and style and are fitter to you will work and some like the feel of blades better, but it a choice of feel and touch more than one type of club being better than another. if all blades were better then all pros would use them, its the same with the brand, if one make was best then they all would use it. most good makes are very close in the results you get using the there clubs, its more down to how it feel's in your hands and if you get that good feeling on the tee.

Re: Blades??
This has been and can be debated for ever. Some claim that mid/high hcp players should not play blades because they are too hard to hit solidly, some claim that blades actually help improve your swing because you are forced to hit the ball better.
I don't know which claim is true (probably both), but I am pretty certain that no matter if you are a high or low handicapper, there are clubs out there that are optimal for you, regardless of design. The important thing is to try many different clubs before you make any decisions.
In many golf shops you can get a custom fitting without actually buying anything, i.e they will let you try out several different clubs and monitor your shots to determine what clubs you hit the best. If you don't buy the clubs, you will most likely have to pay for the fitting. If you have the opportunity to get a set custom made/fit to you, that's even better.

Re: Blades??
I can definately recommend the Mizuno MP-32's, they are muscleback blades and are more forgiving than normal blades. They sit beautifully behind the ball and look even better in the bag, you often get admiring glances. I only play of 15 at the moment and changed to these about 18 months ago, i used to use cavity backs but I would say i feel a lot more confident over the ball now and when you strike them you get a lovely long high ball flight. I cant see me changing to anything else I absolutely love them.

Re: Blades??
Guys,
I currently use cavity back McGregor V Foil Irons. I Have only been Playing since last June. I shoot around the 90s and 80s. Today I shot a 86 but could have putted better and scored better. If I was putting as I usually do I woud have shot a 78 or 82. I was playing really well, for me anyway. I tend to hit really high shots with these irons. Today I took a blade style 5 Iron and hit the club really well, and lower. If I switched to Blades would my shots be a bit lower? I think I hit the ball a bit too High.

Re: Blades??
As a general rule:
The deeper the cavity, the higher the ball flight. Ergo, blades hit lower than cavs.

Re: Blades??
For those looking for blade type ball flight, I often suggest Muscle-Cavity irons. Something like the Wishon 550C (http://wishongolf.com/designs/ironheads/550c/) or the SMT 303CB2 (http://www.smtgolf.com/irons_303cb2.asp) offers more forgiveness than a blade (Wishon 550M, SMT 303MB), but less forgiveness and more feel than a cavity back.

Re: Blades??
I play blades, the Accuform Canada PTM irons, 3-P. I have another set of blades, Wilson Staff DynaPower, 2-9. I tried cavity backs, I don't like them.
From my experience, the difference between a mucleback blade and a cavity back is the amount of feedback they give to the player. The blades give the most feedback while the cavity backs give the least amount of feedback. This means that blades will hurt on bad hits while cavity backs will not. It also means that a player using blades will learn much more quickly how to strike a ball properly than a player using cavity backs. Combine this with the shaft flexibility and you could get any amount of feedback you wish. The pros prefer extra stiff with blades, in other words they prefer maximum feedback. A side effect of this tremendous feedback is that the pros have maximum control of the club and the ball.
Conversely, you could say that since cavity backs give the least amount of feedback, they allow the least amount of control.
All other stated differences are simply marketing hype. Except one, if you do not want to improve your ability to strike a ball properly through extensive practice, use cavity backs so that at least you won't hurt yourself striking the ball improperly. Which by my understanding, will be quite often.

Re: Blades??
hi martin
i dont agree that to play better golf you have to use blades. if that was so then all pros would use blades, i do agree its about feel and touch but you can have both with cavity back clubs too.
ping eye 2 was the most used clubs used but pro's at one time and the had no probled shaping there shots, its the same noW with the guys using ping G5, the hit high then low shots, fade and draw the ball at will, i know i had no problem hitting low draws with my ping zings and now play a high fade as my bread and butter shot and i am not that great a golfer, both type of club have its + and - but to say if you want to improve you golf you have to use blades is untrue. just ask lee westwood.
