  • question about wedges

I need to purchase some wedges. i have cobra 3100 irons, my set came 3-PW i know there are also a 50* 55* snd 60* available. Should i go for the matching set or should i go with a different model or different brand. Also which shafts are better for wedges steel or graphite? Much appreciated gentlemen.

    Re: question about wedges

Assuming your irons are to spec, with the PW being 45° I'd suggest going with 49°, 53° and 57° wedges. However, I've noticed the 9i is supposed to be 40° - so a 50/55/60 might be better (to keep yardage gaps more similar to the 9-PW gap).

As for steel or graphite? It's up to you. I'd probably go with what's in my irons.

      Can a lady reply

      What degree is your pw?

I carry 48*, 54* and 60* wedges. The former is my pw, the middle is my sw and the latter is my lw.

Wedges these days come with specific shafts in them. So whatever wedge you chose go with their suggested shaft.

This may sound funny, but, look is one factor for me when chosing clubs. I suggest looking and trying a few brands. Whatever feels and looks good I suggest you chose.

I would steer away from gap wedges. Just a personal thing. That's why I have equal degree difference between my wedges.

      Good luck.

VP, The reason that you may 'get away' with 6° gaps in your wedges is that your swing speed may not be high enough to require smaller gaps.

Ideally, 10 yard gaps in your scoring clubs is what you're looking for.

          Re: question about wedges

my PW is 45* so i was probably going to go 50 55 60 to keep it nice and even. Does anyone know of a good place to purchase single irons or wedges to match sets? Happy holidays all.

I would be very careful here. I struggled with my wedges for the longest time – big bertha – fat soled wedges – then I tried other wedges, thin soled wedges – and for whatever reason my problems dissipated! In fact, when I go back to the big berthas I have the same problems. I read a thread here, and a lot of people had problems hitting those wedges. So, I would absolutely try before I buy. For reasons I am not sure of, I am developing a preference for steele over graphite – I like the certitude of steel. The shaft flex posted on too many graphite clubs is meaningless. Although, with a shorter club it may be less of a problem.

In terms of brands I have wedges in both graphite and steel and made by various manufacturers Taylormade, Ping, Callaway, and Wilson. It works for me.

              Good luck,

                Hi LP,

I agree with what you say but my theory behind the degree difference is that I can work the club anyway and have more variety of shot, eg, choke down and so on.

I generate speed and hit a good ball, albeit, for a gal. This lass is a smidge over 5'10"
