    Advice on Replacing my Pitching Wedge

    I have a set of Titleist 804OS irons, and I like them, and appreciate the forgiveness in them, even though they feel a little clunky to me. I use 2 Volkey Spin milled, and one Taylor-Made TP wedge. I love the feel of those wedges! When I move from a shot that needs a bit more than my gap wedge, the pitching wedge feels like are cartoon.

    My shot making is improving at a steady pace, and I play these wedges great on full swings. Is there a style of PW I can use (from another Titleist, or other iron set) that would give me the same feel as the Volkey/TM wedges? They don't make a Spin Milled 46º (my preference as all my irons are spaced that way now), I could use a 48º and have it bent.

    I imagine the SP Volkeys are akin to a "blade" set. Which blade PW would fit into the feel I get from the Titleist and Taylor Made wedges?

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Spin milled?

    SMT 303MB is what you're looking for.

      Titleist's new wedges are called "spin milled". They have a design etched into the club face which helps grab the ball to spin more, I believe they also have square grooves. Very nice clubs, but they only go down to 54 degree.

        Yep. SMT has an entire line of irons and wedges designed that way. Titleist is playing catch up.

        SMT has your lofts covered from 21° to 59° before bending. All 'spin milled', and available in players cav, muscle cav, and blade to 49° (blade only after 49&#176. smtgolf.com

          Try a 48 degree titleist black nickel, they are lovely wedges, the spin milled wont be made down to the lower lofts because of what they are designed to do, spin the ball really hard. They will probably feel like a decent transition between the 804's and the SP's.

            Mr. Spock, this is why I don't actually play the SMT irons - too much spin. But for my wedges? They're fantastic - I love the extra spin for chips and pitches. I'll take all the help I can get.

              Mizunoman, thanks, I hear Mizuno has some great wedges these days... I was torn between the feel of M irons and the Titleist, in the end I found a great deal on the Titleist.

              LowPost, Thanks for the suggestion, I've never heard of SMT. And what is the difference between player cav, muscle cav, and blade?

                A players cavity is a smaller head, and a shallower cavity. It's not as forgiving as, say a set of Callaway irons, but more forgiving than blades or musclebacks.

                A muscle-cav has less cavity than a cavity back, (halfway between a blade and a cavity). Usually the mass is put behind the sweetspot - really adding some pop to sweet spot hits.

                Blades are your classic wedge shape - just a bit of a flange on top of the sole.

                The only thing SMT didn't offer was a muscleback - more weight added to the blade style. Not forgiving at all.

                  Not too well lowpost, I qualified for the last 16 ok but got knocked out in the first round. I had been playing like a tit for a couple of weeks and just didnt have the game on the night. I was hitting everything too far past the pin and leaving some horror putts to deal with. But it was ok, another season another chance!!!

                  Mizuno Wedges are a bit like Callaway wedges, very heavy and clumsy. I had 2 black ox wedges but they werent as nice as I had hoped so I punted them for my Cobras, which are fantastic.

                    Hey guys,

                    Just for giggles I looked around a big golf shop for wedges under 50 degrees. I saw a CG 10 and 588 Clevelands and a forged Mizuno. I must admit I found the Mizuno 47 degree to be lighter than the Clevelands and not as clunky. I'm also a sucker for the sound of a forged iron... so I took one home. I'll try that as a replacement for now. Thanks all!
