Does anyone have experience of the Bang-O-Matic drivers? They seem to do well in the long distance competitions and I have seen them recommended in a mag. Any info appreciated.

I used to be the proud owner of the Bang. When you hit one out the middle the ball really flies. I had a stiff Harrison shaft fitted into my 9*model so I really had to swing at the ball to get it going. Maybe a less powerful shaft would be better.

My advice is that unless you're a really consistent swinger go for something more forgiving, I changed to a R7 and have maybe lost a few yards but i'm definitely straighter.

I saw the 460 cc one with a harrison striper shaft advertised for a good price. I read an article on it in the international club golfer mag where it was thoroughly recommended. Their test verdict said that model was very long and fairly forgiving. I generaly hit straight or with a slight draw so will give it a try.

A bit late now Brian but you might be interested to know that National Club Golfer gives it a "Best in Test" award.

Well, the Bang arrived and it is a bit of a looker, the black head has some semi circular metalic groves running around the back end, the Harrison Striper shaft is a contrasting blue with yellow text.

Took it to the range and had some initial mixed results. The first few shots came off well with a fairly low flight (It's 9 deg loft) quite pleasing. Hit a few push shots after that, the shaft is stiffer than my G2 and I think will take a bit of getting used to.

Played a game with it on the course Saturday, nice weather for a change.

Ripped off the first shot a mile, problem was it was a big push right that sent it straight out of bounds. Second shot from the tee straight down the middle (nice steady swing this time).

Played a mixture of slight draws and further pushes (in no particular order), decided to give it a rest for the back 9 and had a successful session mainly using my 3 wood and 5 iron off the tee.

Reliving the first outing I feel I was trying too hard with it and getting too armsy, this was restricting my upper body rotation thus the push shots creeping in. Need to take it a bit easier and get my arms and upper body working together.

Back to the range (drawing board) this week.

Latest on the Big Band theory.

Had a range session and took both my G2 and the Bang and I was getting better results with the G2 on average, after some consideration I noticed the G2's shaft was around an inch shorter. Had an inch removed from the bang's Harrison shaft and tried it again last night, what a difference, most were straight down the middle, medium trajectory that ran well on landing.

Back to the course with it this weekend, Trial Saturday when I have a game with my wife, real stuff Sunday for the monthly medal.

As a matter of interest what were / are the respective lengths and how much distance (ignoring accuracy) did losing an inch cost?

                Is the Bang still longer?

The G2 was 44" the Bang 45". I don't have any real comparison on hit distance yet. I used the 44" Bang at the range and didn't notice any perceived loss of distance, the flight is slightly lower as it is 9 deg against 10.5 for the G2, it did appear to run on very well on landing and I am hopeful this will give me some extra yardage. Maybe the weekend will tell and as the fairways have dried a lot I expect less plugging.

Chickened out in the Monthly medal and played the G2, drove like a demon and came in with a 71. Confused now, why did I buy it?

                      hi brian
sounds like you had a great round, keep both drivers and when you have a bad day with the "bang" you can always pull the g2 out for the next round and know you will play ok with it. maybe you will find the "bang" better on windy day as the g2 does fly high.
great to hear you shot a 71, that means your short game and putting has got a lot better in the last year and it sounds like the long game is getting there too.
                      keep up the good work.

                        Hi Bill,

I did use the Bang in a game Saturday when there was some high winds and it was good for keeping the ball low with plenty of carry.

My short game has always been fairly good but has got more polished with some of the Pelz methods. My driving has been the better part of my game, OK I get the odd off period but by and large I can drive with a nice small draw that more often than not gets the fairway. I have been working very hard on my irons recently which is paying off nicely now, I never used to like my 5 iron for some reason, that has all changed, I love it and can shape so many differing shots with it.

Yes Bill, I will keep persevering with the Bang and I am sure with a little more confidence it will come into it's own.
