recently got some x18 clones from my club, about a third of the cost with all of the performance.belong to the crown golf group, maybe there is a course near you.

You serious mate? I thought you'd only just had a set built to spec.

Anyway two suggestions - one serious, the slighty other tongue in cheek.

Either road test this year's Benross offering, the full iron set or (my preference if I was spending) the combo set. Or.

Stay with your current set and go off to a "short-game school" - that way in 3 months you can ask advice for a low teen handicapper

That said, I think there's more to this idea than just what new clubs to get.

Perhaps the subcontious notion is ok, I'm good now, if I want to be better, i need to get better clubs in order to do so, then my game will continue to grow into them...

It's the one thing we golfers have over our equipment, we are sentient aware creatures, they are inanimate objects incabable of self defence. So, any bad shot is obviously THE CLUB's fault......!!!

im playing acer xp tour irons (callaway clones)
im looking for a bit more feel i was thinking of trying a blade.
i think a trip to the local pro would help put me in the right direction

Hi Slats,

I would suggest getting rid of the clones anyway, I really don't like them, usually cheap made and not consistant, to improve your overhaul game you do need a good set of clubs and that said, second hand is not a bad option as long as they can be ajusted to fit you and your swing now. Remember as we improve clubs need to be fitted again. Your swing will change as you improve, once you get to around a good 18 h/capp then spend a bit more on a good set even blades if you like them. Sometimes blades have the opposite affect of making you swing better as any misshit, then results are very poor but be wary.

I would suggest a good set of Mizuno's....MP60s, Taylormade....OSs, Ben Hogan...cavities etc etc must be forged if you want to have them fitted, Callaway and Ping are only factory done and cannot be re-ajusted so don't buy unless you are lucky enough to find a set that suit you.


Buy a good second hand set or last years models cheaper and spend the rest on lessons and range balls, I have had 11 lessons since October, thats nearly one every two weeks over winter.................How many have you had....!!!!

seriously though i am going to see the pro tomorrow at the club i have joined to book an assessment session and take it from there.
he seems very well regarded within the club so im confident about his coaching abilities.
hopefully with his help and lots of opportunity to practise the 'cap will come down this year.
what do you think of the mizuno mx23

I think the Mizuno MX23 and the lessons will be a perfect combination.

Better still have a few lessons then get him to fit you using your best swing, then you have to work toward your best to get the best from your clubs.

How hard is it for you to source components across the pond? Sorry for the big brush, but generally speaking, everyone from the East tends to recommend OEM gear, with a decided slant to Mizuno. Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to make fun, but I'm curious as to why I don't see many non-North American guys suggesting component stuff?

Slats - do you want more feel or more feedback? These two are quite distinct.

For more feel, you can go with a forged head and softer shafts. These combined will provide much feel. I don't want to get into the forged vs cast debate, but in my own experience, forged feels better. It has been documented that part of feel is the sound the ball makes when struck - and forged sounds different from cast. A really nice set of heads are the SnakeEyes 600 series. I played the XC's, and considered a set of C's before buying Wishon 560's.

If you want feedback - move to something more bladelike (the GolfSmith Tour Cavity is a popular forgiving players head, and the SMT irons are also tour-ish and forgiving for their design (also higher spin). The other thing to do is go to stiffer shafts, and lose any vibration damping in the shafts. These will all contribute to much more feedback.

And just a point of interest: Ian, Callaway and Ping only continue to warranty clubs bent by them. Your local clubmaker can bend them for you as well. However, if a shaft breaks or you need to send it back for any reason, make sure you have it bent back!

I have always been lead to believe if you bend a Callaway it will break as these are cast and made to order, unlike forged irons.

Mizuno make a quality iron, a few years ago used by most European Tour players until sponsor money when through the roof and they demanded more clubs in the bag, when I used to go and watch the Benson & hedges years ago there were loads of Mizunos in bags regardless what the bag said.........!!!

For me it's Taylormade as there stiff shaft suits me perfect, where I struggled with Mizuno but that doesn't take away what a great club they make.

I swear by Cobra (cavity back) irons, and big sticks. Forget blades, they will only drive you to drink. Just a thought.... you could use them to cut your throat when your game goes wrong!!
