It's too bad really. Like I said, the feel is simply amazing... and what about the shot shaping. If you play the CG10 wedges, then you know what I'm talking about.

Just got Golf Magazine's 2007 Club test. They didn't test much IMO. However....

1) The top rated player iron, if you can believe it, was the Cobra Carbon CB. In 2nd came the Titleist 755.

2) Callaway X-Forged came in middle of the pack. It got wacked for play off the tee and out of the rough.

Sounds like you narrowed it down pretty well. Everyone I know who owns Mizuno irons loves them. I don't think you can go wrong with them. I agree with you that Nike is not in the same league with Mizuno and Callaway when it comes to irons.

I'd try the Titleist. Hear great things about them as well.

Id strike the nikes and add the taylormade r7's tp ur list. Ive always played pings but didnt like the s58's.
I spent 2.5hrs buying my new set today and went for the mp67's- more forgiving than a pure blade and being mizuno u know when uve hit a good one!
Send me a message if u want further info of what I thought - I tried the mp62,60's tm rac tp and r7 tp and the callaway x forged and can give u my opinion on them all
ps im in the same situation as u - a 4 handicap with a short game that is stopping me getting to scratch!

kbp: I tried the Titleist 735CM's today and was impressed with them. I still prefer the feeling off the clubface the Mizuno MP67 and 32's and Callaway X-forged and TaylorMade RAC MB TP's give although I would recommend the Titleist's as well. The top line of the club and the offset was a little bigger than the others above and I felt the titleist's would give a little bit more forgiveness at the sacrifice of some workability (although the Titleist 735's were still workable). I would say these clubs are perfect for players who are reasonable ball strikers but don't want too much forgiveness and still quite a lot of workabilty. Does this agree with how you find them?

Having now tried all the clubs, I have now made my decision....Mizuno MP67's

I felt the TaylorMade RAC MB tp's felt very nice at impact although were narrowly pipped by the Callaway X-forged. This was also due to the lack of TaylorMade custom fitting centres in Scotland.

The Callaway X-forged felt beautiful at impact but the Mizuno Mp67 and MP32 won due to the slightly superior feel. The Mizuno's seem to give the ball a real 'zip' off the face and I felt I could really feel the ball being compressed and running up the grooves and came off the face beautifully.

I was slightly put off the Callaway's by the slight cavity and I have heard some superb things about the Mizuno custom fitting centre jst 20 miles away from me. Booking the appointment tomorrow and can't wait to be given the same club customisation options as the tour pro's!!

Now to decide on what Driver and 3 wood to buy, but I'll save that for another day and another post.

Prowlsta: I would be interested on your opinion on the clubs compared with what I have said. was it the TaylorMade Rac MB tp's you tried? (the ones with the mass behind the sweet spot)

No it was the RAC TP CB's - they felt good but no way near as good as the mizuno's.
I agree with everything u said above - the callaways appearence put me off as the club head kind of blended into the hosel which I just found a bit off putting. I assume ur off to Cumbernauld - will be interested to hear what they come up with - I live in Edinburgh but bought them down south as I know a pro down there who sorted me out with a good deal.

I was on the launch monitor and found that the club was surprisingly forgiving - especially compared to the mp33's I tried!! I hit 40 balls with the mp67 and they varied by 8 yds which considering I push/pulled a couple is more than reasonable.

I just cant wait for them to arrive now .... there's always the trepidation that I havent made the right decision!

Think you made a good choice. They are still a muscle back blade. But they offer a bit more forgiveness than some other blades out there. Everyone I trust loves Mizuno.

Yes, I would agree. I don’t know if "forgiving" is the right word, but they aren’t as harsh or penalizing on off hits as I thought they would be. Sunday I thinned a 7 iron off a down hill lie and came up about 5 yards right (scratch that....5 yards SHORT) and 5 yards left. I can live with that. I’m much more interested in improving, for the long run, rather than just shooting low scores. This is my first foray into "players" clubs and so far they’ve exceeded all my hopes. I play right to left, easily, so I was looking for something with less offset and something I could develop my left to right game some more, but I was a still a bit hesitant. I expected it to take some work to used to, and it did, but really only 5 or 6 range sessions.

These are used clubs and aren’t quite in "mint" condition. If I’m still pleased with this type of iron at the end of the season, I will definitely take a little time and check out the Muzuno line. One nice thing about the Titleist 735CM is that there’s a lot of them on ebay, new and used. This was a pretty inexpensive way to spend some time with a better set of irons, without dropping $700 and getting burned on resale later.

a number of people have commented on the fact that when I thin the bejesus ouf of the ball it still ends up close to the target 90% of the time...

I love the feel of a properly struck shot with these irons.

My handicap is usually in the 7-8 range, but I am a senior and my driver swingspeed is in the 85-95mph range. 7-iron distance is about 150-155yds and a good drive with some run at sea level is 250yds.

I currently have a set of Titleist 981SL irons with Sensicore shafts. These are good irons, but I have some trouble with the long irons and have resorted to putting a 2 and 4 hybrid in the bag and have left out the 5-wood, and 3&4 irons. These are no-name hybrids but with good Irod graphite shafts.

I attended a Playgolfamerica demo/instructional day in February. I wanted to check out the latest hybrids with the idea of adding a 5 instead of my 5-iron.

I first went to the Wilson stand and hit both their 5-hybrid and their new DI7 cavity back 5-iron. To my surprise, I could hit the iron better than the hybrid, and I hit a lot of balls!

I decided to concentrate on changing my irons instead of adding hybrids (mainly because I feel I get better distance control with irons), but also because I saw no difference in performance of the 5iron.

I hit Wilsons, Pings, Titleists and Taylormades. I unfortunately did not keep track of each model. But, I do recall that the cavity backs were a lot easier to hit.

I have been looking at TM R7s. But, I can't stand to look at large offsets. The TPs look better, but I have not tried them and I don't see myself as a Tour Player

I had a look at Titleist 755s today. They look good, but not sure what improvement in playability I would get over my present irons.

What I am looking for are a set of irons with excellent playability, very little offset. Workability is probably not so important, because 99% of the time, I would want/hope to hit a straight shot

I will start another thread on the subject, but I really don't understand why so many irons have so much offset and how this is supposed to help!

After attending the Mizuno custom fitting centre, I have now recieved my irons! I tried both the MP32's & MP67's with different shafts etc and got the following:

3-PW MP67's
1/2 " longer and 2* upright
4 layers of tape and multi compound grip
Dynamic Gold S300 shafts

tried the 3 & 4 in Mizunos fli hi range but was hitting the MP67's 3 & 4 iron better!!! Still not had the chance to hit them yet tho...

I went to a Titleist/Cobra demo day recently and tried various irons. But, I also hit my own Titleist 981SLs. I found no improvement with the newer irons.

But, during the winter, I did notice a difference when using some other makes with playability features. The ones with low and back weighting seemed to feel more like my hybrids and were easier to hit, at least for the longer irons.

My last three rounds were 77-75-74 , so my desire to change irons has waned! But, course is playing short so when I start to have to hit 4 or 5 irons more often, I may be back!

My current leaning is toward TM R7 TPs or Callaway X20 tours. Both have aspects of playability but don't have excessive offset which I don't want.

I think the club manufacturers are on the wrong track in making almost all the more forgiving clubs with large offsets. Not everyone slices! Some of us draw the ball! Why not use heel toe weighting instead of offset to compensate for swing styles as some do with woods?

Where is the Mizuno fitting centre you went to? I'm thinking about a set of MP60's and would love them to be custom fit. I live in the North of England and am quite prepared to travel to get them.
