    GPS - brand pros and cons

    I already have a Bushnell laserfinder that I find very useful when practicing my short game and measure some reference points on the course. However, I've becoma curious about GPS devices and was thinking I should invest in one. I believe today's models are all based on the US GPS system, but I also think I've heard that Europe is launching its own system.

    DOes anyone here use such devices? Are there any differences between them? What does one need to consider when buying? Are there reasonable outlets available on-line? Pls share your experiences.

    I can't talk to the Euro/US thing, but I use an iGolf GPS unit in conjunction with a Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 TE.

    The main difference between the GPS and the laser is that the GPS can give you accurate carry distances over hazards and distances to elevated greens, blind shots, etc. I particularily like that I can know how much fairway I have on a dogleg before it runs out with the GPS (as the laser can't pickup the first cut). However, the laser is best when it comes to distances to the PIN, as GPS only gives front/middle/back. I chose the iGolf over Skycaddie for two reasons: 1) No annual membership fee and 2) 11 custom mappable points.

      Guys - get back in the game.

      I use a cheap and printed course guide (full of scribblings and notes) and my patented iSight 2007 manual rangeseeker system (eye-Sight, get it? )

      Is all that tech-stuff really necessary?

      Or am I just posting this in a fit of low-tech jealousy?

        iSight 2007? Did you have surgery? Or should it be a model in, say, the late 60's?

        I'm still working towards developing my eye (as rangefinders aren't allowed in comps). My late 70's model iSight is still a pretty basic model - it hasn't been used enough to fully calibrate it's yardages.

          Mine has that issue as well.

            My home course doesn't have too many yardage markers within 100 yds, so after reading a review of the Sky Caddie GPS on a golf cart web site i went out and bought one.

            Now i know my perfect approach wedge yardages, so i can put my Dave Peltz finesse swing into practice.

              Yep, I finally joined the 21st century and got a Sky Caddie SG4 last year with the golf cart mount. The Air Base had them on sale, best thing I ever got, works great, makes playing an unfamiliar course a breeze. Just down load the course from the internet, this part I didn't like, you have to pay a yearly fee to down load courses. I forget what it cost, thinking it was like $29 or something. You can mark a yardage then mark again when you get to the ball for exact distance, for no other reason, this feature is worth the money...lol...every time one these kids starts yaking about the 300 yd drive he just hit, you say nope, sorry guy, check it out 267 yds your a little short...lmao...priceless.
