  • bunker rules...........

hey guys!!! i need your help on a dispute i had with a fellow golfer. here's the deal......my buddy hit his tee shot into to a bunker that had had casual water in it a few days ago. instead of just sand in the bunker there was sand/mud. well, he felt that he should be allowed some type of relief due to the muddy condition. can anyone help me out with the ruling on this??? thanks.

    Re: bunker rules...........

The player may drop the ball in the bunker at a point that provides maximum available relief (i.e., in 1 inch of water rather than 5 inches or in a dry area of the bunker if there is one). Alternatively, the player may take a one stroke penalty and drop outside the bunker.

      Re: bunker rules...........

Sand/mud is not casual water so he does not get any relief.
He may declare his ball unplayable and
      a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or
      b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or
      c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.
If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.
