    Re: USGA grooves rules

Once again, the USGA has their head where the sun don't shine, but that's another matter.

Yes, they are eliminating the box grooves found on modern irons and wedges. The ruling for all doesn't go into effect until Jan 1, 2014, but the USGA is instituting a condition of competition effective Jan 1, 2010 the box grooves be illegal. It's much like having a 0.860 driver a few years back - completely fine in competition under R&A jurisdiction, but illegal under USGA. The difference being that where there's a large cash payout at the end, the groove rule will be there starting 2010.

In other words, for the average amateur tournament, you'll be fine until 2014. If you never, ever, play in a USGA sanctioned event, then it doesn't matter what you play.

      Re: USGA grooves rules

      hi
i know in the UK that almost 98% of all clubs do not use the conforming club rule in there monthly comp's and it only at regional and county comp's that the conforming rule comes in.
most club player will never ever play in a comp that they have to worry about the groves on there clubs.
if you look up the R&A rules on conforming clubs you will see it only applies to pro and semi pro players plying in the top class of game.
i do not know if this is the same in the USA.
      cheers
      bill

The USGA is fond of making rules to rein in the 1% of golfers (the truly elite) at the expense of the other 99%. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it has something to do with being in bed with equipment manufacturers.

I don't know that I would worry too much about groove rules or any other type of equipment rules at the amateur level. If your golf club is anything like mine, which most are, you could show up with a sledge hammer and if you can swing that thing and hit a golf ball, no one is going to say a word about it. They definitely aren't going to pay attention to your grooves. I would be surprised if anybody at a local golf course even has a groove measurement tool....I bet they spend twenty minutes just finding a rule book, even if they wanted to check....lol

As Low Post stated above, they are trying to reign in the top guys in the world. Those it is aimed at have gotten too good, too precise. It's like auto racing regulating specs to ensure safety and competitiveness. I this case USGA is trying not to make it so easy to land a ball eight feet past the pin and spinning it back to one foot or less. I just wish that I was one of the ones who would actually be effected by the rules change.
