  • Do you have to play by the rules???

    Hi guys,
do you have to play by the rules? or in the spirit of the game if your opponent or playing partners reckon it is a fair thing or ok to bend them a bit is that considered acceptable. Reason for asking is not so much for me or the hackers I associate with rather than the big guys - I was watching the first round of the Castello Masters from Spain - the group of Clarke, Olazabal, and Garcia I did not write down what hole it was however Clarke was on the green, olazabal was short of the green, garcia was on the green. I presume that clarke's ball was potentially in the line that olazabal wanted and for whatever reason olazabal hurried onto the green marked clarkes ball and threw it to the edge of the green out of the way went and played his shot all OK. Then clarke arrived picked up his ball from the edge of the green and casually walked over and replaced the ball where olazabal had placed the marker, on TV it looked like Garcia was having a bit to say about it.
I was under the impression that whoever marked the ball must replace the ball as per rule 20-3 /20-6 quoted below from the RANDA web site

A ball to be placed under the Rules must be placed by the player or his partner. If a ball is to be replaced, the player, his partner or the person who lifted or moved it must place it on the spot from which it was lifted or moved. If the ball is placed or replaced by any other person and the error is not corrected as provided in Rule 20-6, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. In any such case, the player is responsible for any other breach of the Rules that occurs as a result of the placing or replacing of the ball.

However the guys just played on and i do not think any action was taken, don't get me wrong i am all for the spirit of the game and if there is no real advantage given and it is agreed to by your group OK. But when 1 shot could mean a bag of money..... I was wondering what you think

    Cheers, Wayne

I think you have misread the rule

    Clarke is the player

If a ball is to be replaced, the player, his partner or the person who lifted or moved it must place it

Thanks mate, sometimes you don't see the forest for the trees, as a guy who spends most of his life reading legislation and rules that little word OR slipped on by. I had never actually read the rule previous and one of my earliest playing partners was absolutely adamant that this was the case not that it ever created an issue, but i guess it is better to ask the question and get a correct answer.

      thanks
