Yes you are entitled to relief from Casual Water but you must drop, not place, the ball.

      See Rule 25-1b(ii) below

(ii) In a Bunker: If the ball is in a bunker, the player must lift the ball and drop it either:
      (a) Without penalty, in accordance with Clause(i) above, except that the nearest point of relief must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker or, if complete relief is impossible, as near as possible to the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole, on a part of the course in the bunker that affords maximum available relief from the condition; or
(b)Under penalty of one stroke, outside the bunker, keeping the point where the ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the bunker the ball may be dropped.

          Tee off order of play;
OK, OK----so this is sort of a "petty" question but as my father-in-law is such a stickler on the rules I just can't resist it.
He has the honors (based on the best scores from say hole #4) and tees off first on hole #5 but he doesn't come in lowest score at the finish of that hole. I was told he goes to the bottom of the foursome and hits dead last on the next hole, #6. He says no, he loses his honors on hole #6 but somehow reverts back to the scorecard standings on hole #4.
Then he says my information was based on the old British system and his is based on the newer American system (We're playing in Canada).
Methinks he's been overdosing on his Viagra but I'm likely wrong here.
Are there even rules for this? (I'd like to 'get' the old bugger on this one!)
          Thanks guys...Wil

Yes. You may carry as many of one type as you wish, subject to the 14 limit.

            Mickelson often carries two drivers.

The honour is based on the scores of the hole just completed.
If two players have the same score, their order is based on the order on the previous hole.

              So A B C D score 4 6 5 5 on hole 1
              The order is A C D B
              If they then score A5 B5 C6 D5
              The order is A D B C

but if they score A5 B4 C6 D5 on hole #1 is the order

                B4 D5 C6 A5 or is it

                B4 A5 D5 C6 ?

Again, if A loses the honor does he drop right to the bottom?

                  The second case is correct.

As B has the lowest score he has the honour
A and D both have the next lower, so they both go before C who has the highest score
A goes before D because he was ahead of D on the hole just completed.

NB. In stableford, bogey or par competitions played with handicaps, it the the net score which is used not the gross score.

In normal strokeplay, with or without handicaps, it is the gross score.

                      Rules Questions Answered

Hello, I am new to this forum, but it looks like a great site.

Can someone tell me if this is a rules violation or etiquette violation?

A player was already out of the hole, laying 5. His partner was 12 feet away laying 2, plus he got a stroke on the hole. The player away was not near the line of the closer player. He purposely putted his ball toward the other players ball (not toward the hole) so he could give him a line on his next putt. I know it is unethical, but is it a rules violation? I have tried to find the ruling, but have not been able to.

This was a men's club event so the entire field was involved. I know if it was just a foursomes match we could have conceded his putt and he would not have been able to putt it.

                      Any help?

                      Thanks,

                      tk

Playing out of turn to provide an advantage should lead to disqualification (Rule 16 I think).

There is no rule prohibiting this specific action. However, his opponents could have conceded his stroke or his next. If he continues and his action would be of assistance to his partner in a fourball match the partner is DQd (Decision 2-4/6)

I know if it was just a foursomes match
I think you mean a fourball match.
In foursomes the partners play one ball alternately.

Order of play is Rule 10. However this was a fourball and the members of the team (partners) can play in any order.

If you are in an unplayable position, the rule states that under the penalty of one shot you can drop within 2 club lengths of where the ball lies. What happens if 2 club lengths does not get you in a playable position?
