  • Lost ball in flooded bunker

All our bunkers were flooded today. My partner hit his ball into one. It was a massive pool of water, very muddy, cloudy water and fairly deep. We could not find his ball. Even putting the rake through the puddle did not locate it. So I am sure if we waded in and searched on our hands and knees we might have found it. But that was not on the cards. So, in a comp, what would we have to do please?

Re: Lost ball in flooded bunker

The issue is whether the ball had been sighted as landing in the bunker. If you only assumed the ball entered the flooded bunker then you would have to play the ball again from where it was last hit under the penalty of stroke and distance (Lost ball). If you sighted the ball entering the bunker but could not find it then it would be the same as a ball lost in a hazard, you could drop a ball from a point where the ball entered the hazard any distance back from that point in line with the hole, under a penalty of one shot.

Thanks Brian. That is terrible though is it not. We both sighted the ball going in the bunker. So, we would have had to of got our wellies on to find it again.

You would not need to find the ball if it was certain that it entered the abnormal ground condition (water). I forgot to mention that you could take relief from the water by dropping the ball (Or substituted ball) back in the bunker (No nearer the hole) without penalty, if that was possible. Otherwise you would need to proceed as per my previous post.

What about "casual water" ? Assuming it is known the ball is in the bunker, under water, but the bunker does not usually have water in it, might the casual water rule come into play? Or, does the fact the ball is in a hazard take precedent over a temporary accumulation of water? I have played in tournaments where the temporary accumulation (irrigation) water in fairway bunkers were deemed casual water by the rules committee. GJS

Water in a bunker is Casual Water (ie an Abnormal Ground Condition). The only free relief would be to drop it in the bunker as best you can, not nearer the hole.
