  • Valid Putting Stroke

I am watching the US Senior Open and have noticed that sometimes when a player is within a couple of inches of the hole, they place the putter behind the ball and drag it into the hole instead of making a putting stroke which actually hits the ball. Is this valid? If so, from what distance is this allowed? I have noticed this quite often in both professional golf on the TV and in club golf, but it has never been questioned by the commentators.

    Re: Valid Putting Stroke

Certainly the ball must not be pushed , s****ed or spooned but I thing you will find the in practice the ball does in fact leave contact with the face of the club almost instantaneously. The Rules Officials (now Referees) are pretty attentive in these situations.
