  • Water hazard drop rule question

My buddy hits onto the green and the ball rolls into a water hazard that surrounds the green (it's sort of an island green in he middle of a "c" shaped pond). He drops on the green side of the hazard, claiming that he can drop on the line between the hole and the point where the ball entered the hazard.

I think he should drop on a line extending from the hole through the point the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard but he has to keep the hazard between the drop point and the hole, so he has to drop on the other side of the hazard (not on the green).

Or he could hit from the t box again, i guess.

    You were right

    Rule 26-1
    a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or
    b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or
    c. As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

Thanks. Those rules a bit hard to interpret sometimes!

The key seems to be the hazard must remain between the ball drop and the hole, the ball drop needs to line-up with the hole and the point where the ball crossed the margin of the hazard.

Since the roll rolled over the green and entered the hazard on the other side of the green it means the ball needs to be dropped on the other side of the hazard to the rear of the green. At least that's what I think.

The REALLY tricky thing is how to broach the subject with one's competitor.

Yes, the hazard needs to be between the ball and the hole with a straight line from the ball, through the point it last crossed the hazard and then to the hole.
You last point is tricky. Try to catch him before he gets too far and be diplomatic.
