    hi all

im rick from nottingham uk.only been playing for a 3months and i am doing really well, decided i wanted to take golf up properly and went to my local golf shop to get fitted out with a set,i know own wilson staff di7 irons and 3 fybrid 3wood and 10.5 driver putter ect. i play 3 times a week, im am now actually hitting the ball up and away on my irons but not as far as i would like any ideas on getting more distance or does that come with pratice and time?

still got teething problems on my driver i can hit it no problems there but it goes straight for a second or two then it goes right right and more right,i am not a quitter and will not let this stop me using it,so any advice would be great.

    Hi Rick,

Welcome to the site I hope you get some help from it.

I would suggest at your level you leave the driver at home for a year or so, use your 3 wood off the tee and practice with it, it will be easier to hit right now and will give a decent distance.

You are correct that distance will come later' don't hit too hard or fast right now just work on a nice smooth swing, it may help to get a few lessons with a local professional to get you started on track. Please enjoy the journey.

I am new to golf as well, and my sons who are teaching me wouldn't let me touch a driver for five months. The 3-wood is enough.
Even with the three wood, my sons only let me hit tees with it at the practice range the first few times - just trying to clip the tees.

I just got a driver last week - if you can't hit it absolutely right the error is compounded by the shaft length. I got a high-trajectory Big Bertha draw-driver with the 460cc face it seems to be very forgiving. Right now, I am not so much concerned about distance as I am concerned about staying in the fairway.

Another tip I learned again today - if you end up in the forest or in an unplayable lie, it is probably easier to take the penalty and get back in the fairway than trying to hit your way out. "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before fall."
