So I have visited this forum since I got into golf a couple of years, and read all kinds of little tidbits about what goes into a good swing. Things like hitting down on the ball, keeping a bent right wrist, that sort of thing. It had come to my attention that there are many different ways of getting the job done. While I have enjoyed the discovery process of building a swing that works for me, I haven't had an aha moment until recently.
The book I read while on vacation last week (I did bring my clubs) was "The Impact Zone" by Bobby Clampett, which I checked out from the library. His book talks about the dynamics of a good swing. When I think of a dynamic as it relates to golf, I think of a means to an end. In this case, the end is consistent solid contact with the ball, sending it off like a bullet towards the target with consistent trajectory & distance for the club being used. The dynamics he proports are:
Of these, I would say the big one was aiming to bottom out the swing in front of the ball. This did three things: It got my mind off the ball and got me focusing on the swing (HUGE!), it got me hitting the ball first every time, and it helped me define the target line. The last two got me swinging from the inside, and added 15-20 yards to each iron (can you say "casting?" I knew ya could).
Next is to work on the girly accountant's upper body. Another book for another thread (Golf Shape Cindy Reid).
Cheers, GB

In this case, the end is consistent solid contact with the ball, sending it off like a bullet towards the target with consistent trajectory & distance for the club being used. The dynamics he proports are:
- flat left wrist through impact
- a swing bottom four inches in front of the ball
- loading/cocking as fully as possible going back
- lagging/delaying hand action as long as possible coming back
