  • Hi from me...

    Hi

Just stumbled across this site while looking for golf tips funnily enough

I've just turned 50 and after a brief dalliance with the game nearly 20 years ago, decided to give it another go. Had 6 lessons while on hols in Mauritius and been spending a lot of time since then on my local range. Played the 9 hole (par 33) and seen my scores come progressively down. Best is now 38, average is 45. I've not yet got a handicap, but my scores seem to suggest that it should be around 20?

    My first question is...

While I'm obv making progress, and I am seeing improvements from picking up tips, is my best course of action to take another couple of lessons? I think my biggest problem is that I need to generally refine my swing/grip/stance etc and make it more consistent. I can't seem to get any more distance than 175-200 (with range balls, 3 wood) without adding slice or sometimes hook and my driver generally is worse! I'm sure my pro told me everything I needed to know, an if I could refer back to those lessons I'd find my answers, but I simply can't remember it all!

    Second question...

    What's a really good book/DVD from which I can get tips/techniques/advice?

    Lastly...

Another viewpoint is that I'm enjoying what I doing, relishing the 'self-improvement' challenge and I don't want to fall into the trap (that a friend of mine had many years ago) that when you get to a low handicap quickly, ANY duff shot ruins your round (percentage wise) and can then ruin your whole day! Might I be better NOT to try and improve too quickly and to simply to carry on as I am and enjoy the game?

Looking forward to any replies, but don't expect me to live on the forum... I've got to get back to the range! LOL!!

    Hi Jon,

Basically you are on the right track, a few lessons to get all the basics down, i.e. set-up, grip, alinement etc.

For me the best book by far is Nail It, Three Skills Golf can be ordered from this site www.3skillsgolf.com , just keeps everything simple, no mind boggling information to slow you down, at our time of life we have already missed the Tour Pro boat so I suggested this book as it will simply help you to some good ball striking and hopefull help you enjoy some golf.

We at this site do not recieve any royalties or have any connection to this book whatsoever, just incase you are weary of sales gimmics.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

        Re: Hi from me...

Thanks Ian, I've just ordered it
Interestingly, the title made me think "Hang on a moment..."

I was at the range the other day and one of the pros, who was just finishing off a lunchtime basket of balls, suggested that I should alter my iron 'attack' slightly... I was trying to get 'under' the ball and lift it I guess, but he said I should try instead to imagine a nail under the ball and to try and drive the nail further into the ground. The effect on my iron shots, 5 right thru to my new 64 lob is awesome.

So now I'm intrigued and can't wait to find out whether this 'nail' approach is part of the system! Even if it is (and I already got it for free), I really want the other 2Skills

          Well what can I say.

          This book is BRILLIANT!

It simplifies the whole thing and really works.

Another massive recommend from me, I'll prob pop over sometime for a proper lesson just to make sure I reading the book right!

            Re: Hi from me...

p.s. just got back from the range and short practice area.

            Range - 8,7,6 - bucket of 120 balls.
Only 5 went off line and only then by 15-20 degrees. Distance not yet as consistent or club variable. Anything between 75 and 150 for any of them, but generally the longer clubs are going further... which is nice.

Short Practice - PW only - Went around 'tidying up' loose balls.
All aimed at same direction. Must have hit over 250 balls. Happy with contact, aim and general accuracy about 75% of the time, over a variety of distances from 5 to 75 yds.

This is all just using SK1 basically. I think SK2 is happening naturally and I've not yet worked out how to do SK3 ;-)

              Hi Jon,

Saw in your intro that you had been golfing in Mauritius. My fiance and I are golfers and she "really wants to go there for a golfing honeymoon" !!

Have you (or anyone else) got recommendations of the best places to go in Mauritius?

              Thanks

              J

Hi J and future Mrs J

                We stayed at http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Locatio...Bel_Ombre.html

As you'll see from the photos and reviews it's really not shabby

The golf course is Championship standard, and there's short 9 hole tucked inside it.

Didn't get to see any others while there sadly, but I gather there are quite a few, on east coast I think.
