Good morning, everyone, I have just reached the HCP 7.9 and the need to become much better is still growing. I am looking for distance form off the tee, which I desperately need.

Together maybe we are able to discover the secret of distance.

    cheers

    Hi there,

    Welcome to the site,

If only it was that easy.........the faster you swing the further the ball goes, true but other eliments come in.

Personal fitness is one way to gain distance, exercising the torso, the other main eliment is to make a square contact, the better the contact the more compression placed on the ball the further it goes.

    good luck in your quest.

    Ian.

      Hi Ian,

Thanks for this useful advice. But what is the secret of club head speed. This is one of my biggest problems. On the other hand, exercising the torso which I`d like to do but which muscles should be trained?
Where can I find some clues?

      Cheers

      Wolfgang

        Hi Wolfgang,

I was being quite evasive with the training side as I feel a general fitness level around the torso should be enough, a rule for good ball striking should be fit but not mussel bound, there are not many tour players with six packs and arms like tree trunks.

Personnaly I think speed is created by making the arc smaller from the top, looking at the ball I see a small semi-circle (picture attached) this is all I think about when swinging attacking from the inside, square at impact then back inside again.............thus a small arc, the better you become at making this arc smaller the faster the club goes and you know the rest.

        Hope this is helpful

        Ian.

Lag and the late hit. Trying to make it go faster makes it go slower.

          Stupid game.

            Exactly Neil,

By making the arc smaller, you hands move less and the club head more, also by trying to make this line of attack (small arc) then you will automatically create a late hit which is how speed is created.

            Ian.

              Hi Ian,

Although, I am on an age of 54 I am physically quite fit and I wouldn’t become a body builder. But especial training makes sense all the time. If you have got some hints to do an extra work out please let me know.
Lowering the arc I can imagine what it will cause. If I hit a ball, I am looking and hitting at a particular dimple on the ball, which is about 45° left off the target line (right hand player). Would it help to increase this angle? What did Darren Clark mean as he said in an interview, “Hitting a long drive, you have to take the hands as far as possible away from the head.”
Sorry for asking so many (maybe stupid) questions. I am looking forward to your reply.

              Cheers

              Wolfgang

I thought a late hit for a drive is not useful. If I am right my pro said that.

                I am quite confused.

                Cheers

                  Rubbish,

All Tour Players have a late hit, very noticable with very late hitters like Garcia, but I can assure you all of them have a late hit.............

Now lets get away from the late hit and look at what causes this type of hitting, you have answered your own question really, hitting the dimple on the inside of the path creates a late hit without trying to do it.

My explaination about the arc and making it smaller into the ball creates a late hit and more power.

Watch this about a smaller arc.

What Darren Clarke refers to is the back swing make it wide and keep the hands as far away from your head as possible.

                  Ian.
