  • New to GTO and back to golf after 30 year layoff

    1977: Young athletic body + fair swing + 1976 Wilson 1200's = acceptable +16 handicap

2008: Aging, no longer athletic body + unrecognizable swing + circa 1976 Wilson 1200's = unacceptable +33 handicap

HELP! MY GOLF GAME HAS FALLEN UP AND I CAN'T GET IT DOWN.

Hi I am the same returning to golf after a 32 year lay off and find it very hard to get back into it. Coming slowly but not getting distance on the ball as I did before.

Time for new sticks - we've come a long way, baby, in terms of distance forgiveness for missing the sweetspot.

New heads, shafts that fit your swing and grips for hands that perhaps aren't as strong as they used to be.

I agree with LowPost 42 about the new equipment.

I have played continuously for many years, and changed equipment every few years. As long as you buy carefully and good brand name equipment, you can't go wrong. I bought all of the equipment used or on 1/2 price sales. A good used two years old generation of equipment is good value over the latest year's hyped models in Golf Digest ads. When I resold them, because they were brand names, I got close to the amount I paid for them originally, or at the least at a reasonable depreciated amount to validate my enjoyment of them for the time.

The new technology and compensations for my advancing years, and better knowledge of the swing allowed me to be playing better than I had when I was younger. I have a mess of hybrids, no iron above a 6, 4 wedges, all lightweight graphite shafts. I regularly shoot in the mid 80's and on occasions in the high 70's. I'm 69 years old and not in great health (heart and arthritis) and have to ride, but like to walk away from the cart as often as possible.

It's a great game, the spirit of it is discipline, fair play, appreciation for your fellow players. Better than most.

Ted, it's a relatively new idea, but have you considered a hybrid set?

            LowPost42,

I'm fine with the setup I have now. I don't have much problem with the 6 iron down. I hit everything straight to a soft draw, and the swing is pretty sound. I love to play different shots with my shorter irons, so hybrids would defeat that purpose. The reason for the 3, 4 and 5 hybrids is, as you know, they are easier to hit and higher softer landings than the equivalent long irons.

As well as the hybrids I have perform, it is tempting to go all hybrids though. Even Dana Quigley is thinking about going all the way down to a 7 hybrid, he's at 6 now, I believe.
