A good 'thinsulate' vest, under armour coldgear longsleeve and a wind shirt go a long way to making the day enjoyable. Warmth and layers without bulk.

Skidoo mitts and a toque are good, too.

I also like a thermos with hot chocolate and Baileys.

As LowPost says layering is the trick, and also the large mitts help for in between shots..

I've played well into cold weather every year, often past Xmas. Check around to see which courses are open and tee off an hour or so later than usual, say 10:00. There may be frost delays. It'll take a full day, as it by the time you're finished, it'll be past 3:00 and starting to become darker and colder.

My usual layers are: on bottom, moisture wicking (polypropylene) long johns, regular pants and outer rain pants to cut the wind: on top regular golf shirt, fleece shirt, and outer wind jacket. Goretex, or any of the new breathable but water proof fabrics, are good for the outer layers. It's the wind that makes you feel colder. I wear a regular golf hat, with a toque pulled over the crown and over my ears.

Are you in NE USA? I'm in Toronto, which has a lake effect, which sometimes moderates the temp. NE USA does not get that and could be bitter, as I recall when I lived in Quebec and played the courses there.
