  • Weak Legs (Tiger Woods Swing)

If I kind of "sway" my legs from one side to the other while doing my swing, I hit the ball perfectly, perfect shot, hitting sweet spot, and getting good distance. My pro teacher keeps telling me when he sees me on the driving range that I got weak legs (similar to Elvis P), and instead MUST keep left leg stable and not move my body to the side. This is very similar to watching Tiger Woods swing, where his legs and body basically doesn't move before his downswing. If I do it the correct way, I can NEVER hit the ball, but if I do it "my own way" I always hit the ball (7 out of 10 times). What am I doing wrong, why can't I play correct golf with the Tiger Woods Swing?

    Hi,

The only thing your doing wrong is not giving it enough time, I would focus on the hips, when you swing back feel like you are not moving them, (they will of course move) but it feels like they don't.

This should cure you legs, the coil is whats important for power.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

That reminds me of a Will Smith quote from Bad Boys; "My sh!t always works sometimes!"

I'd say an air-whack 3 out of 10 goes still needs some work!

Seriously, if what you've got works, use it and gradually adjust it. Don't leap into wholesale changes just because someone said they essentially don't like the way your swing looks. If the "correct way" (as you put it) means poorer shots, then it ain't the correct way for you.

I don't like the look of a Jag X-Type, but it's still a wonderful car.

It depends on what you are now doing to stay stable. Are you just standing there like a statue and only swinging from the upper body? This would be a good reason why you can't hit it...neither would I.

Did you pro at least tell you how to correctly use your legs? He told you what not to do, but he should have followed it up with, "You use them this way".

The legs should facilitate the rotation aspect of the trunk (your hips to your shoulders). They will move, but in a way that allows you to spin about an axis point centered. This axis point has slight movement laterally as you transition the weight from leg to leg...but only slightly. So you should feel like you are using the legs to accelerate the rotation of the swing from the bottom up...starting at the bottom and finishing at the shoulders.

Practice just propelling your trunk around in stable circle using your legs and you will get the idea I hope your pro was trying to make.
