When driving the golf ball, Ben Hogan, in his great book on fundamentals, emphasized the need to move the left foot forward in the set up - a little bit like a good baseball player has his left foot out in front of his right foot. In fact, he recommended this set up for long irons as well. Is this still recommended? When I do this, I invariably hit the ball off-line to the right. Is Ben still right or do most golfers advocate a more parallel set up?

Re: Left foot placement when driving
I'll check it at home, but it was more drawing the right foot away from the target line rather than moving the left foot forward wasn't it?
Hogan felt it helped him get a better backwards turn with the longer clubs.
If you're moving your left foot forward, I'm not surprised you're pushing it. There's little else that can happen.

Re: Left foot placement when driving
Thanks for the response and "drawing the right foot back" from the target line is a subtle difference. I will continue to tinker with it. I see how having the right foot back promotes a fuller turn and my hunch is that I am not turning enough. I think I've been getting my chin to the ball on the turn and not behind the ball. What's one more swing thought when I have about 25 to keep in my head right now!!
